Metal Gear Solid 4 freezing/crashing
-
Tuesday, June 17, 2008 6:00 AM
It's freezing on me. I've gotten to Act IV without it freezing once, and now I can't play 10 minutes without getting a little disc/question mark flashing in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Once that has began flashing, the whole game except that **** freezes and the only thing I can do is go into the Quit Game, Controller Settings, Turn Off the System and Turn Off the Controller menu. And when I choose Quit Game and Yes, the screen goes black and freezes. So I have to turn off the PS3 with the On/Off button. With my hands. On the IGN forum, they say you just have to uninstall the game from the harddrive and then it's all good again. So I did that. During the install it freezed again. The ****er. I deleted it again and installed it sucessfully, but the problem is still there. Do I have to get a new disc? Do I have to get my PS3 fixed? Searching the internet, I found at that not many people have this problem. I can still play other games and movies, but some of the other people with this problem can't play anything. So I assume it's the CD that is faulty for me, and the Blu-ray drive for them? There are no scratches on my disc, no dirt or fingerprints. It's ****ing clean. When it has been inside the PS3 for a while and you look at the bottom of the disc from an angle, it looks like it has smelted a bit. It's like.. warped. It's kind of aggrevating to have come so far and gotten so involved in the story and then not be able to play. Anyone else with this problem?

The ps3 has stuff running in the background, like ps2 upscaler and such, which take away from the processing power of the ps3, as it runs these unnecessary applications not needed while playing a game in the background, including blu ray 1024p settings, ps2 upscaler, media server, it's best to try and turn all thsoe off, as it just puts more strain on the ps3

And it sounds like its freezing at a certian time. So it could be a faulty disc. Though i guess its worth trying before getting another disc.

I've been running into somewhat of the same problem, except mine freezes up completely when I am playing metal gear online. Only does it every so often though but if I don't catch it in time it hard locks my entire system. Forcing me of course to use the main power switch on the back to turn it off and then back on. Anyone know the exact reason for this? If it's just the CD I can buy a new one, I just don't want to wake up and find my PS3 fried like I did only once before. (Disc reader was faulty but was dealt with quickly by sony.)

(Disc reader was faulty but was dealt with quickly by sony.) Word of advice, never resort to hitting the main power switch when your PS3 freezes. In the long run, it will permanently damage it. Instead, keep your finger firmly on the reset key for 5-10 seconds until you hear a beeping sound. It will always work no matter how or when it freezes. Just don't reach for the power switch in those instances. After you hear the sound, the green light will start flashing and wait for it to turn red. Only then should you switch it off from the back.

Trust when I say that it is Always my last resort, but 5-10 seconds go by, then a minute and no power down.

@harry190 - very good advice, I try to tell people this all the time.... @ Ackbaria - To me this sounds like one or two problems, one a hard drive problem, to test this download a movie trailer from the PSN store and watch the trailer back -Look for a moment of slow down or slight freeze - if this happens it could be possible your hard drive is going bad. Also if you decide to delete the game to do a re-install try to free up as much space as you can by deleting old trailers or demos you don't play and just to be safe, anything you recently downloaded delete that and re-install it after you do the MGS4 install because -lets say you just downloaded a demo and it is corrupt, depending on where it is on the hard drive it might be affecting the new install of MGS4. so delete recent stuff too and then re-install. ...second problem you could be having could be dust, I know it sounds crazy but dust creates read problems as well, and it happens in a few ways (one way to tell is if you have any dirt or derby like a line or mark on your games when you eject it from the PS3), I won't go into all of them just to keep this short and sweet let me just say try to blow out any dust in the PS3... two ways to do this, best way is to go to the gas station use the tire pump and blown air through the vents of the PS3.. or if you have an air can... second way, vacuum the dust out by using the vacuums nozzle and putting it next to the vents to suck the dust out... No matter how clean you keep your PS3 it has dust in it, it's a dust magnet and all PS3's get dust in them, but depending on how much dust is the difference between it being fine and it creating a problem. Good Luck hope this helps.. -Give us some feedback if you still have problems maybe we can still help.
WE DONT STOP PLAYING BECAUSE WE GROW O L D... WE GROW O L D BECAUSE WE STOP PLAYING.

Thats a good idea to do that. But sometimes your PS3 could be completely frozen. Were it wont even restart if you do a force restart. Turning off the power in the back isn't going to murder it. There built better then that.

ORIGINAL: krazykid My MGS4 has never froze. Same here, not a single freeze through several game playthroughs. I'd start by checking the disc and then the PS3. Does any other game freeze?

when you start seeing the flashing question mark means the disk is unreadable .so either it's scratched and dirty of you lase is haveing issues.
