yeah for multimedia and stuff i don't really use my ps3, aside from dvd's and blurays. I dont really mind though becasue generally my ps3, 360 and pc is all connected to my reciever and monitor so i just switch screens.

just giving a couple of easy ones to make the system more friendly for heavy content users:

- a search function, instead of needing to browse through the whole list of folders (even needing to use "view all" to make sure I don't skip any)
- a playlist that works further thean the built-in hard disk, not even any attached USB disk is included in the playlist function
...THESE ARE SIMPLE PARAMETERS TO SET, NOT A COMPLETE SYSTEM WORKOVER...

network browsing is old technology, and there are many systems around, for free, tat work, Samba one of them
it's the risk of using illegal content that prevents them to implement, is my assessment. But why should we pay the price for their fear of having implemented an inferior protection system?

I think this generation has spoiled a lot of people on what to expect.  For media, I have my computer.  I'm not even interested in uploading several movie/music files YET until Home comes out.

Home is around the corner... in a few weeks or months..
and this is the first discussion I have seen, so I started it.

IMO if you think Home will be the time you need it, you should act now

Nah, Sony takes it's sweet time to release stuff.  Plus it's a quick and painless process for me to upload my movies/music to my PS3.

i currently have no probs streaming most kinds of media from my non windows laptop (macbook black)
and i rekon that the ps3 works better than some dedicated media servers that some friends of mine use
with their microshit pc's

wait wait wait a second.. what are you actually trying to do.. you want to get rid of your computer all together?  Im just confused at what you want to actually play, becaue I have my ps3 connected to the network, and plays all video, music and picture files that are on my computers hard drive.  But i take it that you have some sort of centralized server that has al your data, and you have various computers accessing that data.  Well if thats the case, i havent tryed to connect to a server, i dont even know if those things run software and operating systems.  But i did transfer all my data to a 500 GB hard drive, with over 100 ripped dvds, 10 gigs of music, and all my photo albums, and it runs directly off the ps3, that an ps3 has the ability to run linux, so i think you point is very mute, considering you can run a different operating system and install software to do everything you want, just takes a little work.

If you would read the post from the start you would see that not just a central data server acces was the point, but also the fact that a PS3 doesn't read most of the current media formats when accessing the internet.
BTW, what is so strange on accessing a data server which is not your hard disk? we're not in the 80-ties anymore...

I think you're confusing the 360 with the PS3.

The 360 is meant to be used (in addition to playing games) as a media extender. Everything on your Windows PC, and the 360 can stream them from there.

The PS3 is meant to be used (in addition to playing games) as a media hub. It does everything natively (although it has some nice streaming options as well) and all your entertainment needs are serviced from just the PS3 itself and go outward from there onto other items (like the PSP).

I wonder what your definition of a hub is?
just outgoing conncections? something like an inversed black hole?

BTW I was talking about the PS3 only, I don't consider the 360 as something serious.
next to that, an extedender is not a hub/

Can we talk real facts here? all I get is half answers and defensive PS3 behavior. I wamt to discuss improvrovements of YOUR systems.
If we get to a constructive discussion, we might even convince some people.

ive just have never done it.. dick, so i dont like commenting about things i havent even attempted.  so your main beef is not being able to view media formats from the web?  is that what you think a media hub should be, something you surf the internet web to view short clip videos off of a website???  well it does play youtube.  But i dont really surf the web much when in front of my TV.. but you might, I usually just play video games, watch tv's or movies.  But i guess thats just me.

well, in my area we have internet TV, internet radio, internet movies, just one thing

and why calling names, if we are just in a normal discussion, is respect to much to ask?

The truth is, you're just disappointed because you're not hearing what you want to hear from us.

You're not getting the answer you WANT.

Boo-hoo, cry me a river.

There's no point in asking questions if you're only willing to hear one answer.

I'd consider this discussion closed too, because you're too close-minded to accept that your needs are capable of being met by the PS3, except that it would require a little work. There isn't an easy fix or a simple way to give you what you want, so deal with it and go cry on another forum.

in fact I stopped the discussion, as no-one seems to read the whole discussion, and almost everyone seems to want to defend Sony, as if it is your favorite sports team.
for god's sake, it's a company, with products, and the PS3 isn't what they promised.
how would you feel if you bought a car with a nav-set build in, but the nav-set only works after 2 years?

Booohoo?
you're plain kids, acting in a marketing hype, and you don't even realize it....
