I'm not really partial to brands. 2 HDMI ports are all i really need. I am going to wait till may for the price drops to fall thru. I will be looking at all the brands closely but at the end of the day its the picture quality that matters most.

Well i got a 32" sony bravia with 2 hdmi ports for about $900

its got a pretty damn good picture quality if i do say so myself. Makes me feel like im really in liberty city

LCD

And Vizio has been nothing but awesome for me so far.

I managed to get  a 37" 720p tv with 3000:1 contrast ratio for $700 at Sams Club. It was a super bargain, and I never felt any buyers remorse.

I think i'm just going to get a 1080p 42 inch. I'm going to wait for the price drop before i settle in on which one i want to get but what matters to me most is picture quality. Not all HDTV's are created equal and this 720p set isn't the same as the other 720p set. Anyone know how i can tell better picture with some numbers like contrast ration e.t.c.

You can tell what picture is better when you look at it.

Numbers dont mean jack shit really... it's all about how you perceive the image projected on the screen through your eyes.

For example, my friend thought that a lower contrast ratio 720p set looked better than my higher contrast 1080p set.

It's all a matter of preference, and what you think looks best. My picture quality preference is not going to be the same as yours.

For example, I like my colors on my set to be a little more vivid, and my darkness to be a little darker... I've had people tell me that my colors look weird and the picture is dark... but it works for me!

Actually the the best TV money can buy at the moment according to some reviewers is a Pioneer 1080p plasma
link
plasmas have a much higher colour and contrast ratio but are very heavy and kick out alot of heat and are expensive to buy and run they also deal with faster movement better than lcd at larger sizes but all depends on the size of the screen you want and how much you have to spend.

Plasma: More chance of having a tv with gaming lag
LCD: Less chance

+ LCD cheaper than Plasma for the same specs

if i remember correctly alot of lcds have a slower response time than plasmas resulting in blurr or lag as you said but i think thats an lcd problem not a plasma problem, and plasmas create deeper blacks than lcds.

However lcds are still really good especially since they are alot cheaper, and are now creating better blacks though you might not see this that well in lower end LCDs.

As for plasmas some are still prone to image burn but it would take ages to do so. And the pioneer plasmas at least certian models(reminded me of this when nirwanda posted the link) are redesigned plasmas for better quality..but you would be paying some money for those.

But yeah go with lcd...more so for the price...though look into DLP LEDs as well(picture is really good, and good prices for screen size). They are really good unless you have a well lit room all the time.

But then again...how much are you willing to spend?
