Len, BD won't be standard in PC's at the end of '08.
Maybe late '09 early '10 seems a lot more logical.

Lenheart your on crack if you think every new PC is going to have a blue drive before the end of this year. There is no use for a blue ray drive in PC's. People DL movies, games are only put on DvD's.

Zero point

ffs, now you're on crack. No use for a blu-ray drive in a PC?

Yes...They aren't useful for backing up files, or useful for putting those 8 DVD/multiple CD/DVD PC Games, see Age of Conan (30gigabytes), Crysis on one disc.

My school just replaced their entire back up system with blu-ray drives.

Unless you meant in the context of gaming and media, but I don't think you did.

Games will take atleast 5 more years until blue ray is the standard, it wasn't until last year that games only came on DvD, normal people, the people who buy computers have no use for a Blue ray drive right now.

Really? That's surprising. Isn't it drastically cheaper to just get external HD's for backups? The read/write speed is faster and the drives are cheper...

You're not including the cost of the drive to write/read the discs. An $80 HDD can be read by every PC, a Blu-Ray backup can only be read by those with the drives.

a BLU RAY burner now costs just 250$

It will be costing 100$ by the end of this year

TECHNOLOGICAL displacements occur like this

like i said you will see most PCs/LAPTOPS coming eqipped with a BD drive by the end of this year

MS has succumed to BD attraction and so would many other companies

Right. During this same period, Solid State Drives will also be dropping and are far more attractive than Blu-Rays for back-up.

Blu-Ray will never be the answer for everything. Once SSD's get low, the "Cloud" will be up and running and local hard drive space will be a thing of the past.

A single 25gb blu-ray disk in the UK high street costs £10 - £15 ($20-$30).

I know you can get it cheaper online, but that's the high street price.

Obviously not every PC will have a blu ray drive by the end of this yr. But as blu ray drives get cheaper it will happen and since they are predicted to go down to 100 by the end of the yr then i expect a lot of pc's to adopt blu ray drives by next yr. 2010 is the earliest for blu ray drives to become standard in PC's and if that happens, any device without a blu ray drive is viewed as obsolete

when it comes to media changes the PC is the slowest, 2010 is likely, but it won't outright replace dvd drives.

by the mid of 2009 there will be a total displacement of MEDIA DRIVES in PC

It hurts to see a SONY product excel

but IT IS WARANTEED

Clunky, its about 4 inches long.

I'd rather carry around 1 item that I never have to worry about it getting scratched or it not working because a computer doesn't have a blue ray drive.

Lenhart you can keep dreaming, things have not changed, BR will become the standard but we're halfway through 2008, and in the next 6 months the 1 billion + computers used on a daily basis are not going to have BR drives.

Why would a normal PC user want one, the vast majority of people don't watch movies on their computer, games are not going to use it, most busieness are networked, there is no point right now for it.

Well since blu ray drives can also play DVD, i think it will occur fairly quickly. The sooner blu ray takes off as a media format the sooner it will happen for PC.
