This gen is very young so I would say gears cuz it can basically be reduced to 3 words "pop n' shoot"which every TPS is using now so if influential means spamming "me too" games then gears definitely did that.

I the long term I think it's gonna be LBP depending on it success.

LOL at whoever said bioshock.

LBP would be my vote.  Let the users play a game and become creators. Bioshock gets a nod for its touch on morality, Gears for pushing the graphical envelope, and wii sports for allowing more people enjoy gaming, because we need to share our fun.

I'm sorry but that's not immersion like you think.

i would nominate (for consoles):

  • Home - social networking and interation with developers via Home
  • MGS4 - setting the bar for the PS3
  • Gears - setting the bar for graphics
  • LBP - extreme user created content
  • Fable 2 - choices to govern the outcome of the game
  • Uncharted - cinematic experience
  • Wii Fit - a healthy game
  • Resistance 2 or Huxely - number of online players

Gears of War: Not a great game but now every game and their dog wants to look like it. (Halo is the other game that many are trying to copy).

Wii Sports: Just count the crappy mini-game / party game collections on Wii. Outnumbers the number of FPS games on PS3 and 360 combined!

Assassin's Creed: The first good game on this list. Free running is the new black in many games. Titles like The Crossing literally steal looks and ideas from AC.

GTA4: Saints Row 2 and Prototype are delayed. The Getaway 3 is cancelled. What do these game have in common? They're sandbox games.

COD4: While it set new standards in many respects (From great graphics to good war story to exciting action and overall perfection), it is the multiplayer of COD4 that will affect many future FPS multiplayers.

Pfff.... Flow, Everyday shooter and Pixel Junk Monsters have been far more influential than people think. They're changing how we view small-time games we can download. They're 1/6th the cost of bigger games and have the same appeal, fun and length as those games as well. LBP is in many ways the next logical step from these (even though it's creation has been in the process for longer).

By Feb of 2009, many developers are going to be changing their business methods and what kind of games they will be developing for 2009/2010.

COD4
Wii Fit/Wii Sports
GTA IV
Bioshock
Mario Galaxy
Halo 3
MGS4
FFXIII

Yes I said Halo 3. Halo started the FPS craze. And for the record, Resistance doesn't touch it. MGS4 and FFXIII are the PS3 swan songs, ala Super Mario 64 and OoT. The question is: will they sell more than MGS3 and FFXII? MGS3 sold 4 million btw so even if it didn't beat it it would still have good sales and I think we all know how well FFXII sold.

I think its hands down Gears of War not only did it jump start next gen. But it also lead to a myriad of developers to license the Unreal Engine 3. Heck even Square Enix a Japanese company is using the Engine now.

Hard to say. I still think that it's too early into this generation to decide such a thing.

On a personal level, that game will be out in 2 days. As far as the industry is concerned I'd probably say Kill.Switch. Even though Winback (albeit copying Metal Gear at the time) and Blackthorne did the cover system first, Kill.Switch was the major turning point for using it as the main gameplay feature. After that, Gears aped it now how many games have cover systems now?

I had to chime in and say this. I thought I was the only person to still remember Blackthorne and Winback. They were one of my top favorites on N64 and SNES.

Halo - made the auto healing pretty much standard on all games now.

Gear of War - made that cover system pretty much standard on shooters now.

I guess things like that make games influential.

Halo didn't make auto healing a standard. It was only in Halo 2 that you didn't have a health meter but a shield indicator.
Serious Sam had a 'tourist' difficulty setting where your health would auto regenerate and many space flight sims had a self-repair capacity in it. Even MGS3 eliminated health packs with your health coming back based on your stamina.

I would have to go with Lair..... Never before has a game spawned so much hate and ridicule.
