Vacuuming is a bad idea.

They create static, and static is to circuit boards what dynamite is to mining.

Used canned air or a compressor instead.

Canned air blows the dust back into the unit, how is that any better?

Dust does prohibit cooling, but canned air will at least knock it out of the way so it can cool.

Whereas a vacuum will remove the dust but the static will blow tiny holes in your IC's and other components. We're not talking walk up and touch the light socket level of static, we're talking much, much higher. Do some research. With a vacuum, the cure's worse than the disease.

*Edit* I looked in the manual, and it does seem like Sony recommends this for the vents. Specifically a low powered vacuum. Some sort of brush attachment would be advisable though, IMO. Even touching the plastic of the vents directly would be close enough to arc.

But can't the blown in dust get in the transistors and flux capacitor?

Lots of misinformation here.

1. Call Sony. Your PS3, PSP and vacuum are all broken but your phone must work.

2. If anything vacuum it out. Blowing canned air will blow it back in. You don't want that.

3. PS3 warranty is one year.

4. Price of PS3's are the same in Canada and the US.

With a low-powered vacuum. Full sized is definitely dangerous.

True. Low powered with a brush. I believe Sony states this on the owners manual.
