4 Generations my friend

1. Wolfenstein/Doom. Your basic gaming mechanic. Run, gun, find bigger gun, find health pack, more running, more gunning.
2. Just a Half life. More based on storyline and puzzles, allows you to be sucked into the game, while also making you think.
3. Halo Effect. Limited amount of storage space on master Chief shifted the focaus away from gun and health pack collecting to a more immersive feeling. FPS become more about the battle and less about the economics of munitions. (economics-The distribution and allocation of scarce resources with alternative uses.
4. Never Die Alone. Co-op. L4D, model Alien: Colonial Marines, and Resistance 2. Usually online people don't view other more then human shield for the back. A game that requires you to take people under your wing.
I changed Your numbers.
Thank you for actually responding to my post.
Half Life online was more a turning point in FPSs then the single player. Half Life and all the user mods and user content. There was user created eliments in FPS before but never like this. CounterStrike and Day of Defeat.

New list

1. Wolfentstien:
2. Half Life: MOD squad
3. Halo Effect
4. Never Die Alone.
2. Half Life: MOD squad

You forget the Realistic shooter generation.

Realistic shooters

Tactical shooters not seen often on console games. Games like Operation Flashpoint, Rainbow six : raven shield, Swat, and the first ghost recon before it turned into poo in advanced warfare.

People aren't yearn for more Realistic Shooter. They just want something that doesn't feel light a pee shooter. There are still games that are not using realistic guns. Halo, Unreal III, Bioshock, and Fear.

Wolfenstein-created the fps genre
Half Life-created realism by making it more story wise and adding limits, and also by adding physics/particle effects
Portal reinvented by showing a new perspective on fps.
Could add counter strike as the first realistic teambased fps.

Story what story. Aliens invade scientist has to stop them. Man in a suit visits once and awhile but has no effect on the game. Did I cover it?
Portal is Blinks 2 in FPS form.

While I love Counter Strike, its not that realistic at all, graphically the source version is more realistic however the gameplay tends to be on the arcade side. One of the best mutiplayer online shooters to grace the gaming world.

Your kidding right? Were still in Halo era unless Resistance 2 is decent. I hope it is mind you I'm just saying, don't count your chickens until they hatch.

I don't know I always liked Team fortress 2 better. But then again it isn't very realistic.

It sun now but horizon has a storm. L4D, Aliens, Resistance, and Agency must all be bad for my theory not to occur. Resistance all ready has a large user base. Resistance 2 will sell 1 million+ the first week. L4D will sell 3 million the first 2 weeks(judging from the hype surrounding it, positive press so far, amount of Hardcore gamers). Aliens is a wild card, which is kinda of a sham that it is flying under the radar because every other FPS borrows so much from the movie. The Agency if they promote it on TV, bring it back to a T rating(no blood), add humor to it, will be an easy sell.
