Hmm... I dunno what all the fuss is about. FFXII is a decent game. Balthier is the only memorable character, admittedly, but the game itself does nothing wrong. You have the nice touch of a load of Espers to find, and the idea of the Hunts and hidden Dungeons help lengthen the game for those who want something more for their money. I especially love the touch whereby staple names like Shiva, Ifrit and Bahamut are not used in their traditional roles - rather as the names for powerful ships in Ivalice. The combat system works, if anything, and the idea of Gambits were the only thing I didn't like. While they were needed, I guess, I didn't like seeing people set up Gambits that effectively kept their entire team alive (by automatically casting Curaja whenever someone's HP got too low) and just put the controller down 'cause everything's automated... That, and the rather poor License Board system and design are the only real gripes I have with the game... Other than that, it works. What more do you want when FFXII is nothing more than a filler game leading up to XIII, just like IX was to X?
