Is there anyway you can force reinstall 2.40? Like through a USB key, download it from PC?

Hopefully this works out for you, or a restore or something.

Yes u can use a USB, go to the sony ps3 website and download it from there. I hope it wil work for u

It downloaded, restarted, hit X to install, and now the "sony playstation" splash screen comes up, then the background (default one) comes on, but no icons, the controller won't connect, nothing. Tried various ways of turning off/on, but nothing works.

Damn.

I have never had any problems with my previous Sony consoles, maybe I'm lucky. You should try calling Sony customer service or wait for official words from Sony.

Status: offline 		I called Sony Support - explained my problem, but wasn't next to the PS3 at the time. The nice lad told me that it wouldn't matter anyway, since they have no troubleshooting steps they can take with me over the phone with my unit. I have to send it in, so I get to call later (after I find my receipt or bank statement) and get the service set up.

Bummer.

It works perfectly, it sucks that the highest connection speed available in my area is 1.5MBPS though.

Status: offline 		me and my mate was on private chat (VT on the PC) whilst installing this etc, he started up MGS4 and i stayed on the XMB as i was listening to music :P and we tried to start a private chat but it wouldnt work :( said he needed to quit the game.... but i thought that we could do this in game now.

can anyone explain?

    Status: offline     		heres a question, my friends wont let him update, he still has 2.36 and when he goes to update it says he has the most recent version.  it lets him play online and all that, but he cannot update....
