"America" refers to both North and South America's

***Whille were here for those wo don't know...Central America is NOT a continent***

South America is all the countries below the Panama Canel (give or take), North America is Canada, the United States, Mexico, and the region that is Central America. In total, North America contains well over 30 countries, not 3. Greenland is an island, and is part of Denmark therefore NOT part of North America.

Canada and Mexico are independent countries.

All this confusion is because of a poor choice of words by the US's founding fathers. The USA is a number of states who are united within the New World.

'America' does not specifically mean 'United States of America'. It truely is a beautiful word and unfortunately been tarnished by the Bush admininstration, a couple dumb wars here and there, etc.

Also, South America doesn't all speak Spanish. Brazil's primary language is Portugese, and Guyana is English.

Mexico is definatly not part of a america. to others America is flashy cars, fake boobs and shallow Tycoons bent on screwing each other over. to me i see it as a baby(only about 400 some odd years old) who was Taken, enslaved, revolutionzed and Matured into a well respectable Land where poeple are for the most part free, and are composed of different backgrounds. Unless your native american, we hold no true roots here. Yea i know we are a super Power, and many veiw us as cocky, concieted, and overrated qith a crippling economy, we are ONE and a great country under God.

Not to start any debating here, but that wasn't necessary. The term "under God" wasn't added until the 1950's. It bugs me when people think the entire nation is built upon God. It was built to be a free nation, not a whole religious one ... with one religion.

Ok I just read someone say america the country there is NO FREAKIN COUNTRY CALLED AMERICA.

United States is a part of North America which has both US and Canada(note i listed the two as different areas)
South America is a continent as well.

So there's South America and North America two Continents thus when you say the Americas you are referring to two continents.

Canada is not part of north america, it is part of the Canadas, each province of Canada is larger than several european countries combined, our mortal enemy is the USA, yet every attempt they had at invading Canada they failed because we are so much more better then they are :P

a quote from one of my favorite movies " ahem.... **** Canada.... ey.. **** you buddy"

I think this stems from an term of acknowledgement, or how peopel identify.  Pretty much wherever you go outside of the united states, if a person is from the USA... they are referred to as an american.  not a united statesian, not a USAian, but an American.. whether it is right or not, is up for debate, but the simple fact that the world, refers to people from the USA as americans.  And I know the term estado unidense, is used.. rarely, the term americano is used more.  Take it for what its worth, could be right... could be wrong, the the term american brings up only one thought... as someone from the united states.  And this whole bush administration thing has no basis or bearing in this discussion.

I think he was just misunderstood; I believe he was asking whether other people consider the word or term America for the rest of the countries of the continent.  Normally, we would refer to it as North America, which is what I think he meant.  On the other hand, I've often heard foreigners refer to the continent as simply, America .

This topic has gone way over the edge; and that's not saying much as it was headed there from the very first post.

Point 1:
Canada, United States, Mexico are all on the continent North America

It has just become commonplace to say "The United States of America" due to the "United States" being on the continent "North America."

Just as "Europe" has many countries on it's "body of land," so does the Americas.

In the future bebo, I suggest you be more specific in the type of questions you ask, and also refrain from asking them in a manner that will just generate the above kind of comments (with the exception of the good ones).
