Moreso this generation than any other, I've noticed that ppl who call themselves hardcore gamers do so in a condescending manner, as if to infer that they belong to an elite group of game players. For this reason, the term has developed a negative connotation for me. I used to use it to describe someone who plays games a lot, and who plays a lot of different games. Now whenever I see the term thrown around, I think of a testosterone-laden, graphics-obsessed, male teenager who fluffs his ego online using voicechat while playing the latest FPS or racing sim. Obviously this is a generalization, but this is what it has become for me.

The ppl who I consider to be hardcore gamers by my old definition both here on N4G and in real life never really feel the need to call themselves hardcore gamers. They play games regardless of platform or genre and enjoy the hobby, and that's it.

To me, a gamer is a gamer, I don't really need a distinction. My fiancee plays a lot of RPGs and some FPSes, I don't know where that would put her in terms of everyone's opinion, but I don't care. She plays video games, and it gives us another thing in common that we can share.

I'm really sick of people who think they're "hardcore" because they think Nintendo is kiddy. They wouldn't have their FPSes that they're addicted to and get a God complex from if Nintendo didn't save video games back in the '80s. People whining about Nintendo is why I tend to only post in the non-gaming sections here, because I got really sick of reading their irrational hate. Give Nintendo time, just because the Wii has a kind of meh selection now, it doesn't mean it shall always be. MadWorld is on its way, you know.

Just so you all know, I'm not a Nintendo fanboy. I have a 360 and a PS2, too. I'm just sick of reading all the hate for one company like that.

Do you often know game developer's names off the top of your head (Not just Kojima, Miyamoto and Cliffy B either)? etc. etc. etc.

OH NOES!!! I don't do any of that and I don't have a sister.

someone who spends a lot of time gaming and exploring all the features of modern gaming...for me i am into clan games and online multiplayer stuff.

what you have described is not "hardcore gamer" its the usual forums/thread troll/fanboy...also sounds like you have been SERIOUSLY flamed and recent them -_- .

Funny that some people the are satanising the "hardcore" in this thread probably fit the core description of hardcore gamer...sigh
