Actually they had pretty killer games in Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Vagrant Story, Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, Einhander, Legend of Mana, Front Mission 3, and Chrono Cross back then. All but the last three were new franchises that they could have expanded (PE and BFM got sequels), hell Xenogears alone is 6 chapters (with XG being chapter 5) which WOULD have been made if there wasn't a falling out between Square and Tetsuya Takahashi (unconfirmed).

I

Wouldn't really know about that, Xenogears, parasite eve, Brave Fencer Musashi, Threads of Fate, Einhander, Legend of Mana and Chrono Cross where never released in Europe. (nor was super mario RPG).

All we got was final fantasy and trash like Tobal number 1 and Erhgeiz.

the joining of square and enix ment more games released in europe altho I still wouldn't hold my breath for anything other then FF games to get a confirmed release date (not that I really care that much Nippon Ichi RPGs crap on Square Enix ones from a great hight).

Squaresoft made good games on SNES as well, not just PS1, but I dont think SE's problem is exactly lower quality games, its that the genre they are famous for really has not been able to evolve significantly enough with the times, leading to stagnation of a genre and failing to combat the fact that people's expectations are rising while the genre is largely failing to deliver except for a few exceptions. Many titles I think that are actually quite good, get critically panned or negatively received because they are 'more of the same' or 'archaic controls/level design' or some other nonsense.

But they totally did screw up FFXII, playing that game was painful

It has evolved, I mean you can't really change the game mechanics of an RPG that much because it will not be an RPG anymore but look at Nippon Ichi games they may look old fashioned but the dialogue is wonderful, they are sharp and witty unlike Final Fantasy with there constant rehashes of bad scripts about politics/religion and green issues.

then theres the settings you got things like shin megami tenshin and Shadow hearts pushing away from the futuristic and medievil style settings that most RPGs still plod along with.

I agree with the whole..JRPG's not evolving.

I stopped caring about them when I found out other people making good RPG's too. Fallout 3 hype for me > FF13, but not FFversus13 because there's still a chance it might play like Kingdom Hearts (sans Disney)/Crisis Core. If that goes all, turn-based and RPG-y, I'd rather take Diablo 3.

I liked Square Soft more cause they actually made allot of different and new IP’s back in the day after the merge with Enix they work on 1,000 games at once that they can’t complete and get delayed again and again and again, they make a 100 remakes with minimum efforts for new games and they focus too much on portables (DS, PSP and Phones) and they wonder why their profits are down, make new games for home consoles and manage your teams and resources and you’ll see the results.
