So that's what Great Britain is. I swear I saw a guy competing in a kayak race for Ireland...

What about the UK? What countries does that include? Sorry to sound stupid, but they honestly don't cover that in school over here. I always assumed UK and Great Britain meant the same thing as England.

ok... Great Britain as i have said consists of competitors from england, wales, northern ireland, and scotland. Ireland on the otherhand (the republic of ireland) is a different country to northern ireland and competes, obviously as a different nation. The Republic of Ireland is not in the UK, or Great Britain. So you would have seen a kayak(er?) from Ireland.

Allow me to further clear this up....
The UK (The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland) competes at the olympics with the official name 'Great Britain and Northern Ireland'. This in turn is shortened to Team GB or Team GBR.

Northern Ireland is not part of Great Britain. It is part of the UK.

The British Isles consist of 2 soverign states - The UK and The Republic of Ireland.
The Bigger Island to the right is Great Britain, it consists of England, Scotland and Wales.
The Smaller Island is Ireland, it consists of The Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. (NOTE - On the Map Ireland should read Rep. of Ireland)

In general those from the Republic of Ireland do not wish to be considered part of the British Isles. This is why the term British Isles is rarely used......to stop confusion.

Thanks Neon! That makes so much more sense now! (rolls eyes)

We live in complicated times.

P.S. What exactly is Wales? Another country or just part of England? What about Leeds(sp)?

Wales is not a county, nor is England, Scotland or Northern Ireland for that matter. They are just nations part of the country The UK.
Leeds is a city in England.

Don't get all butt hurt over a joke, Polluted.  And there's plenty of other reasons why people outside of America don't like Americans, I doubt my insignificant forum posts have much to do with that.
