Do you suppose quotes and poems that an individual enjoys are a bit like dreams and vacation slides in that they will never be quite as interesting to anyone else?

Absolutely. Every poem, quote, saying, ramble, etc. means something completely different to everyone. Its where you are at in life when you read or hear it, then everytime you do, you think of that time. At least I do.

Mother Teresa:

People are often unreasonable, illogical, and self-centered... forgive them anyway
If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish ulterior motives... be kind anyway
If you are successful, you will win some false friends and some true enemies... succeed anyway
If you are honest and frank, people may cheat you... be honest and frank anyway
What you may spend years building, someone may destroy overnight... build anyway
If you find serenity and happiness, people may be jealous... be happy anyway
The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow... do good anyway
Give the world the best you have, and it may never be enough... give the world the best you have anyway
You see, in the final analysis, it's all between you and God... it was never between you and them anyway

if you are always negative, you will never be dissapointed
if you are always positive, you will eventually become negative from all that dissapointment

Contradictions do not exist. Whenever you think you are facing a contradiction, check your premises. You will find that one of them is wrong.

Timothy Leary, Also sampled on the TOOL album Salival:

Think for yourself
Question authority

Throughout human history, as our species has faced the frightening, terrorizing fact that we do not know who we are, or where we are going in this ocean of chaos, it has been the authorities, the political, the religious, the educational authorities who attempted to comfort us by giving us order, rules, regulations, informing, forming in our minds their view of reality. To think for yourself you must question authority and learn how to put yourself in a state of vulnerable, open-mindedness; chaotic, confused, vulnerability to inform yourself.

Think for yourself.
Question authority.

Simplicity is the final achievement. After one has played a vast quantity of notes and more notes, it is simplicity that emerges as the crowning reward of art

There are two types of tragedies in life. One is not getting what you want, the other is getting it.
