I think they are in a catch 22, either release the PS4 to soon, or let Microsoft release the next Xbox first?

Sony has already lost over 3 billion on the PS3. They said it will most likely not be profitable. But they used it to win the format war so I am sure they don't even care.

They will make more money off of Bluray than the games division anyways.

2011, as Auto said, is far too soon. There's God of War 3, Resistance 3 and KH3 to come out yet, and none will be available before 2010.

Has Sony began making money on the hardware yet? I haven't heard anything about cost to profit on the PS3 since around the time it launched.

Yeah Sony might finally make a split in the hardware biz where only Nintendo and MS will release their new consoles and Sony will release their new one a few years later. Easier on the pocket book for multi console owners

They won't make a PS3 for a long time. I wouldn't be surprised if they revamp the PS3, release a slim line, faster system with a faster Blu-Ray drive, more gb on the hdd, and possibly a more streamlined cell processor.

Somehow I reckon they need to break even (at least) with their PS3 profit/loss chart before thinking about investment into the PS4...

if i remember correctly they are just starting to even out costs on the manufacturing of the ps3, so within time possibly by christmas they should be making a tiny bit of profit on hardware sales

and ohhhh... i just got a theory.. thats why there were no games out, they wanted to prevent the ps3 from selling to minimize losses, now that they are breaking even/mild profit they are coming out with all the games now

lol sure sure

Like any good company though I'm sure Sony is hard at work with the PS4.

I wish... At least then we'd be able to get Sega back and we could all be Sega fanboys/girls again. :D

if it was your money would you want people to buy your product at a loss and only make you more poor? or would you want it to sell less in the beginning until you start making a profit per sale? and of course they ar, im sure nintendo and MS already have their next console in prototype state now so i guarantee sony has one too. but they would not be thats tupid to release it so soon

I read somewhere that Sony had plans for the 'PS4' in 2012, and Microsoft and Nintendo had plans for their next consoles in 2010.

But I know for sure Sony want to keep the PS3 running, and make it a 10 year console like the PS2, which is excellent news.

actually you want MS to go, they are what replaced sega, sony was in the gaming industry with nintendo for audio back in the NES and partially the SNES days and were going to help create a disc based system called the Nintedo Playstation but Sony backed out at the last moment, so sony was around at genesis/dreamcast

Just... Don't ask.

edit ;; I'm well aware of what Sony have done, Auto. What's more than apparent is that it was the PSOne that killed off Sega's home console division. Even the Dreamcast couldn't match it...

You could also say the Sony is what replaced Atari
