The first-gen i7s were ovens. I'm ok with 920 getting as hot as 85c in P95 (90c+ is where degradation begins, 100c is the thermal limit), though even with a good overclock and poor airflow it generally maxes out at 69-74c depending on the core at sustained 100% load, which is more than fine for a 920. It never sees this temp during normal/gaming usage.

Edit:

Got some new RAM (12GB Corsair Vengeance) since it seems like I won't be replacing this X58 for a while longer. I have to keep mine at 85% tops or else the temp rises too high. It could be because I use an EVGA card, which doesn't have much ventilation. I'm tempted to cut some vents in it.

Temperature does not bother me as long as it doesn't get past the second throttle point (80c). At stock this never happens.

I'm currently running an overclock that gets me around 875 in Heaven 4.0 at Extreme 1080p, and 9300 graphics score in 3dmark 11. Haven't FULLY tested stability yet so need to get on that, and also need to test max temps. Got around 76c which is fine, but this can obviously climb during a much longer play session. Power target is also 122%, but I haven't touched the vcore. Interestingly enough, this is a 67% ASIC quality reference 670 so I'm surprised it didn't devastatingly crash yet, but who knows, it could. Tomb Raider w/ TressFX for a few hours tomorrow will probably be the best way to see.

While I don't care that much for synthetic benchmarks this OC is bumped me from about 69fps average in Infinite to 75fps average, and my minimum framerates in Tomb Raider's benchmark on Ultimate shot from 32 to 37.7 (average went from like 41 to 44.7), which is quite good. Hopefully it remains stable, will kill the mem overclock if not to see if that helps (core is running at 1137MHz with Kepler boost, Mem is +400 from whatever the hell stock is).

@duplissi: my sentiment too. I'm happy with the 670 here, but I would have gone 7950 if I were picking up an AMD card for sure. 7950 is a better OCer than the 670 but so far the 670 has been ok to me, needs more testing though.

@Vashlion: If only I had something as gdlk as that 650m of yours ... if only

Re:Post Your PC Specs Here! I find that most games I play are rarely CPU-intensive and that with a nice overclock it only becomes a mild bottleneck in certain scenarios. With this 670, I pretty much stay solid at 60fps (with vsync) all the time at Ultra+DDOF, and any time it dips, GPU usage is still at 99% which tells me the CPU is not causing a bottleneck. Quite satisfied so far.

While the 670 outperforms the 7850 at Tomb Raider, it's clear that Nvidia is nowhere near as strong with DirectCompute in the 600 series as it only outperforms it with TressFX by a small margin. It still makes the game a lot more playable than the 7850 as far as minimum frame rates go though, which is great. In other titles I've tested like Crysis 2 and BioShock Infinite, the 670 is an absolute monster so far at 1080p

You only have a 670? I don't know much about AMD's processors.

If you are gaming with amd, then you really should have the fx8350 or maybe an overclocked fx8320. anything less than that and amd's single threaded performance will really drag you down (Lower clock speeds) and you wont have the multithreading advantage that the fx 83XX's have (Less Cores). and please just ignore the first gen bulldozers... they were seriously underwhelming.

That being said, I love my fx8350, It just plows through anything I throw at it effortlessly. crysis 3 has been the only game to really test it. In most games it's performance on par with either the 3570K and 3770K, (depending on the game of course) and it even does well with single threaded games- the I5 and I7 are still better in that regard though. skyrim comes to mind....

Edit: if you are running win 7 with an fx processor then make sure you install the hotfixes for them- you will net around 10% better performance, and honestly win 8 is where you should be with an fx processor, it has more optimizations for the fx processors.
Re:Post Your PC Specs Here! (Satanas)
SLI/CFX is worth it if you've bought a single great GPU and later on you're looking to upgrade, where it would cost you less extra $$ to add the same card (presumably at a cheaper price point now) you have vs. replacing it with a new GPU that would cost more money, for less performance. Now, if you can buy a single GPU for not too much more than your existing card and it performs similarly or better than two of your current cards in SLI, then yeah, it wouldn't make sense to do. And of course before making these decisions you'd want to thoroughly Google "xxx card in SLI" performance to make sure it is ok with the games you want to play and is currently giving better performance than other cards you could potentially just buy to replace your existing card.

But just for example, if you want to do surround 5760x1080 gaming as a future upgrade, many of the top-tier GPUs now would benefit greatly from SLI/CFX at that resolution. Like I wouldn't do surround gaming with this single GTX670 right now, but if I SLI'd it later I would (although I only have room for two monitors right now anyway, so adding a third isn't something on my mind currently).

theinkandpen

Thanks, definitely going to stick more RAM in there eventually. I actually find the price of memory is gradually increasing, whilst it was quite cheap before.

In modern systems it is quite easy to OC components, particularly when there is software or motherboard features to help. However, I am not sure overclocking is needeed with current generation architecture. For instance, in the days of the pentium 4 you could incrementally overclock RAM and CPU to boost your rig's performance. I am currently having a bash at Far Cry 3 on this rig, all Ultra at 1080 and running flawlessly. Do I need to OC? I am not entirely convinced.

SLI is worth it if you plan on building bit by bit, IMO. Sure, I could have gone for a 690 GTX and essentially obtained the same performance in one single slot. Another problem with SLI is that not all applications support it and quite a few tweaks may be needed.

I am running Heaven to have some measure of performance.

You don't need to OC if you don't feel you need to OC. It is never necessary. However, there are certain cases where OCing is so easy that I would say just do it anyway as long as you're comfortable with OC'ing. CPU OC'ing is a good idea as it generally boosts your minimum frame rate, but in your case with that 3770K yeah you really don't have to OC anything for the time being unless you're a dedicated benchmarker. I had to OC my 920 about 1GHz above stock to keep it running adequately in 2013, but the 920 D0 is an extremely easy overclocker and I'm actually running at a voltage below stock, rock-stable at 3.7GHz (4.0 would require me to go beyond 1.3 Vcore, which I don't want to do.
