(coolbeans)

in 3D

5/10

Before diving into my annoyances with the film, I should state this first:

-Although I kind of enjoyed seeing the reboot in theaters, after going back and thinking about it afterwards so little of that film stuck with me. Sure, the action was pretty good but the story "boldly went" the way of just about every other sci-fi action film out there. Part of the reason why the hype behind said film initially fueled my excitement leads to my next problem...

-...I don't care for J. J. Abrams. Not just because of him making cataracts in my mid-30's a possibility through his exorbitant uses of lens flare, but how much more seems to go into marketing these films instead of bolstering them with some sort of soul (see: his mystery box idea discussed by Moviebob). For example, the portions I loved in Super 8 were the kids coming up with film ideas as a love letter to Spielberg, instead of the monster constantly teased in the trailers. A similar problem persists in ST:ID, despite the film desperately trying to tease the most obvious secret that any fan could have guessed, its effect does so little since there's no heart behind the production.

Taking place X number of years (or who knows how long) after the 2009 reboot, Captain Kirk still acts as if he hasn't learned anything from original and gets in trouble but then finds himself out of trouble when John Harrison commits terrorist acts. With the original crew, and some irrelevant blonde lady, Kirk is tasks to go after Harrison and obliterate him.

That's really as far as I can go without having to spoil things, but you'll probably see every twist coming a mile away when you watch it: the obvious surprise villain, the idea of a bad guy wanting to get captured, yada yada. I don't mind that idea if character arcs actually advance, but they don't here: Kirk once again goes from bragging jerk to a true hero, Spock has his moments of emotion emotion emotion, and literally every secondary crew member besides Scotty acts as cipher to progress the story. And the only performances worth noting here would be Uhura and Harrison (with such an unexpectedly deep voice by Benedict Cumberbatch) while the rest are on cruise control. Throughout this entire adventure clumsily put together (with such an awful last twist), such a thin narrative is told in such a needlessly convoluted sort of way.

Okay, now that most of my bottled-up annoyance is out and cobbled together I can now admit that it certainly has some good moments: the action scenes are very exciting (though 3D usage here is the cobbled together post-production schmitt), the musical score deserves a mention, and there's some genuinely funny bits of dialogue here.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for a fast-paced, popcorn action flick you'll enjoy it. If you're looking for a Wrath of Khan-esque sequel, prepare to shake your fists at what this writing crew is doing to try and think they now understand what make this series so legendary.

Re:.:Last movie you watched thread:. (MattyG)

 Iron Man 3

- The Mandarin could have been an awesome villain, but they sabotaged themselves with the twist (although he still wasn't awful, just not what I expected)
- Too much time out of the suit
- Did the Mark 42 (43?) really have to fall apart 5-6 times?!
- The movie just couldn't decide whether it wanted to be serious or funny

+ Some really funny scenes
+ The scenes centered around Extremis were kind of cool
+ For the first half of the movie the Mandarin is a good character (sans the accent)
+ The action scenes were quite well done
+ Someone ripped a loud fart in the theater during a quiet scene...
