It'll still do 99% of the stuff the PS3s can do now. So your blu-rays will work, your media playback will work, etc.
To call it "gimped" is going way too far, it's more...refined? In fact, apart from the removal of OtherOS support and a few changes on the hardware level, it's more or less the same machine. Not really any different to Sony removing the various AV ports the old PS1s and PS2s had and didn't need.

But "new" features that some people might expect, like Backwards Compatibility with PS2 games and such, isn't going to happen with this model. I can't say if that'll happen in future or not, but I wouldn't hold my breath. You're not even going to get any more USB ports.

Bigger HDD's though ;)

As in no more than the current ammount or none at all? That wouldn't work seeing usb is needed for guitar hero, singstar, controller charging, and registering the official mic.

USB ports are needed for a lot more than that. Don't worry, you'll still have 2.

seems resonable, that can be increased with usb expanders anyways

It's real, that's for sure. But as I said, it's not "finished", so anything I can tell you about it now may change, although I'd doubt it.
It's going to be a little disappointing as well, but it'll still play all your PS3 games and all that.

Looks are not finished yet, but expect it to look something like that PS3 slim box art that's floating around (which is either fake or only a "test" box, as I said the design isn't finished yet).
It'll be disappointing for some very specific reasons that the vast majority of people wont ever notice. Essentially, just about every non-essential component has been removed - like the switch on the back. And OtherOS support is gone as well, so no more cheap supercomputers, which as I said most people wont care about. But clearly Sony is trying to save every single penny they can, which presumably will go towards that price cut Activision want so badly. That last bit is my own personal speculation, though.
