True that Phantasy Star was from 87 for the Master system, but...Phantasy Star 2 was released in 90 for the genesis. That was one of my favs back in the day. Im a sega fan so: phantasy star series (genesis) Shining series (genesis) Lunar 1 & 2 (sega cd / saturn / ps) Y's series (turbografx / ps) although, Y's is more like a Zelda instead of an actual RPG i would think.

Xenogears and Suikoden 2(play this ****)....Chrono Trigger, FF4, and...pokemon I suppose(Believe it or not they are still good...just...dragged out)

Sorry can not go by the dates... my most favorite are these and the top of my list was made in the 80 at some point...

1. Dragon Warrior

2. Final Fantasy

3.Phantasy Star III

4. The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind

5. Final Fantasy II

6. Final Fantasy Legend II

7. Final Fantasy Legend Adventure

This is my list some are out of the date line but hell, these were all good...
My runner up would be shadowgate for the NES

My first RPG was Secret of Mana. For irrational reasons, it remains my favourite RPG to this day.
Followed closely by;
Seiken Densetsu 3 (Secret of Mana 2)
Chrono Trigger
Final Fantasy VI
Pokemon BLUE

Currently playing Xenogears. Not that far into it, just hangin with some sand pirates at the mo.
