GameRankings gave it a 93%, people on gamespot act like its a 2/10. The new review from ign Au gave it a 9.5, some people think thats a low score to! I don't know were theses people are coming from, I think they just don't know their math. They pretty much just get pissed if its not a perfect ten. Well in reality no game could really be a perfect 10. Kind of like GTA 4. That game had many problems but all reviewers gave it a 10. Yeah these reviews for MGS4 are very good and very fair, I don't see why people complain about them. I'm sure Edge and eurogamer were just really pissed off at their wifes or something, so they just gave MGS4 a 8.

that's the world we live in today.  It's because all games now are just getting 10's for hype only.  Hell I remember when 7 was a kick arse score now it means death basically

lol true :D
Good old days.

I think one of the problems with scores is that some early next-gen games got unfairly stupid 10s and 9s and now that real and worthy great games are coming, everyone wants these to score better.
Look at Perfect Dark Zero for example. It got so many 8.5s, 8.8s and 9s even though we all know how bad it was. Heck, even Halo 3 managed to get an average of 94 which is down right stupid. No offense to Halo but WTF is it doing there? 90 to 93 is good for MGS4 but not for Halo. 80 to 85 would have been better IMO.
So many MGS and PS3 fans just want to see MGS beat Halo 3 (360's flag title) and that's why they're unhappy with current average.

--

I mean, look at StarCraft or Fallout 2. SC is considered the best RTS of all time by many (Myself included) and Fallout 2 is often referred to as the best PC-RPG ever (Again, myself included  ) and they both have average of 88. Back then, 88 meant something. It was a really great score back then.

The REAL problem is in the modern reviewer. Modern reviewers have become too forgiving and have given seriouisly high scores to games that don't deserve such scores.

Ever since people looked at the GTA scores and expected MGS 4 to do exactly the same.

Me, I welcome different reviews, and review scores. I would get board quickly if every review was 10/10.

93% is a good score for any game, i've only ever played two or three games that i would rate above 95%. I havn't played MGS4 yet so i cant say if it should have a higher score

yeah people really take score wayyyy to seriously, and make good scores look bad. Thats why i usually just go by the overall score, not one review. But even so there are underrated games. And i would play those too

But usually I do buy a game based on an average score, mostly because i just cant buy games like i used, since most of my money has to go elsewhere.

But yeah people go way to crazy over scores. Reviews are something to go by not live by lol. And mostly in these situations, people just like to throw numbers at eachother.

Gameranking is very slow to update, but so is Metacritic.

Not that I care all that much, but Metacritic were suspiciously quick to update with the eDGE and Eurogamer MGS4 scores...

Then again, they're owned by CNET, who also happen to own Gamespot.

If MGS4 had a 70% on the big M, would you guys still get it?

I personally would... I don't trust "pro" reviews as much anymore.

games that score 10s consistently across the board normally don't deserve them. the games that deserve their accolades are the ones that average between a 9.2 and a 9.7. the hype machine is at work when any game (or rated material for that matter) gets 10s.

like i remember when Alpha Centari came out, it scored a 98% from pcgamer, and it was highest score for a pc game ever. and giants like HL2 matched it, and it was deserved. but when you see games like Halo 3 and GTA4 which clearly have faults and are not better than the games that score 9.7 and below, you know somethings fishy.

Games are becoming more competitive and expectations are being raised. 93% is decent but would be a lot higher if not for edge and eurogamer. At the end i don't care about scores. All signs point to MGS4 being the hit I WANT IT TO BE so i am cool

Well it's no different then people insulting Ninja Gaiden 2 even though it has 83%. Basically people like to be a-hole trolls and make fun of games for no reason insulting how many pixels the game has (WHATS THE @#%@#% point?) or it's score (Which makes no sense because if it gets a 7,8, or 9 it's not a bad game..). Oh I must be talking about Lenheart here but other people who do the same pathetic thing. They can waste their time with that while real gamers play the game.

haha yeah, now that was a great time

I remember seeing an 8 for a game and thinking "awesome, this game must be really good"

games get too much hype these days, the console war has made sure of that

for example, MGS3 was realesed when the PS2 had already emerged the victor and as meta of 91 was a great score

now...... MGS4 is what FF7 was to the PS1 and GTA3 was to the PS2, and if the game gets anything below a 95- people get dissapointed

I wondered the same thing...After reading some stuff on IGN's forums...here's my theory why people are angry about the score.

The very same days that the 8's were given, they were added to the list right then and there...All the 9's - 10's are no where to be seen.

Where are all the 10's and 9's and the ones in between?...Why are they so slow to update?

Maybe those sites and magazines are not credible right? They are pro PSsites/mags right? Of course they will give ten's, why bother adding them?...They are so biased! Yes!! That could be the reason...

NO
...

Then why are a bunch of pro 360sites/mags like 360 gamer magazine, x360 magazine, teamxbox, totally360 taken seriously? Their scores were added right away when Bioshock was released...Whats so different about pro PSsite/mags that they don't bother adding them?

Ok...so let's just add unbiased sites scores then....So then why are IGN's UK/AU MGS4's scores still missing? they aren't even biased!

It makes no sense.

Anyway, that is the reason I think some people are getting ticked off about Gamerankings.

It is inflation of scores, but let's face it, in any industry, reviewers are not trustworthy as a whole.

Movies are my favorite example. Two gems that I remember off hand are one reviewer stating that Fellowship of the Rings never told us where the Ring came from. Apparently he skipped the first ten minutes. Another, reviewing The Fifth Element, stated that we're never told what the fifth element actually was... apparently he skipped the end. Combine this with the fact that you can find find plagarism in almost any list of reviews for a movie on rottentomatoes.com and you've got to conclude that it's a joke as a whole. Game web reviews in particular like to give outlandish scores (high or low) for page hits, so they have one more corruption vector.

None of this is to say that there aren't individual reviewers with convictions and standards, but a metacritic score is a terrible metric.
