I couldv'e sworn that I read an interview, and CAPCOM said that Akuma was not going to be in Street Fighter IV. Then, I see their promotional anime the other night, and, there is Akuma. I heard the rumor that Gouken was going to be in the game, and according to the video, it seems as if he will. Anyone know whats going on?

Second, if anyone saw the video and knows Japanese, would they be kind enough of telling me what they were saying? Much obliged

i saw the vid and i thought the exact same thing...capcom did say there would be lots more characters in the console versions so looks like akuma is in

The anime video is a flashback sequence, at least it better damn well be considering Gouki (Akuma) killed Gouken prior to SF Alpha which predates the SF2 saga. If Capcom retcons this like they apparently have retconned Gouki killing Vega (Bison) then they've f*cked up the storyline.

Exective editor Shane Bettenhausen took this to mean the appearance of their long standing joke character Sheng Long in Street Fighter IV, though added that if the character did appear in the game, it would be Gouken."

also, Akuma killed their master in the animated version of SF; not really canon. They never really showed Akuma killing Gouken. I also read that some iterations have Akuma finishing the fight with Gouken with a Shun, and Gouken falls into a river. In the end of the video, a man (who appears to be Gouken) turns around from a waterfall. Maybe he came out the river? I dont know, but i've heard several rumors that he's in the game (and not just April fools jokes this time), and now a SFIV promotional video has him in it

Trust me, I'm correct on this one. Gouki killed Gouken and it is canon, if I'm wrong then I'll be the first to admit it. Look it up and you'll see, actually:

Nevermind, my time periods were correct *whew*. That listing for Gouken you linked says he died too in the 3rd paragraph.

yea your right skerj but I think they are including him in sf 4 just for fan service. Just a bonus character.

Probably so, that's like 5 Shoto's though if you count Dan being in it. I hope if Gouken does make it, he has enough move variations from the other 4.

plus, none of the endings ever show Akuma actually killing Gouken. It is talked about, but never shown. Except for the animated movie, but that isn't canon. The point is, it appears they're both in it. I think this will be the take by CAPCOM; even if he is an unlockable character, they'd be able to integrate him as Akuma first was.

plus, it was awesome how they had both Ryu's stage music and Ken's in the animated vid

"When Ryu, now the World Fighting Championship's victor, finally
got back from the Street Fighter 1 tournament, he wanted to ask Gouken what
happened to him. However, he found Gouken killed as well as his daughter
missing (Author note: Gouken having a daughter is a fact that Capcom seems
to have forgotten about by now and thus will probably never resurface. You
can only find out about his daughter in REALLY old Street Fighter official
sources). Ken, however, had seen the end of the battle that happened. It
was Gouki, Gouken's brother, that killed Gouken. Sensing Gouki's ki, Ryu
then embarked on a journey to find Gouki (because Ryu still needs to find
out what happened to himself when he beat Sagat)."

The unknown was the fact that it's unknown how Gouken was killed, not unknown if he was killed or not.
It's questioning if it could be from the SGS, because like it states Gen survived it and maybe
Gouken could have survived it in the same way should Gouki attempt that move. Bison/Vega could not have survived it however which is
why it's even more mystifying that he's in SF4.

what I was saying, was that they never showed Gouken being killed in any ending, which means anything else is not canon and can be changed. Also, Akuma only kills with the Shun, or "raging demon". Thats how he killed his master, Goutetsu (or however you spell); he tried killing Gen with it, but Gen survived because he cleared his mind and gave up all evil in him. He did it to Gouken, but Ken only witnessed the fight, but never saw Gouken actually dead. He "killed" Bison with it, because Bison had evil, but Bison is back. Maybe Akuma's ending in Street Fighter Alpha 3 won't be taken as canon (the only explanation I have for that) .. i don't know; regardless, the point of this post was that both are in the game. In the end, CAPCOM can change storylines, which they've done quite often in SF; and they've left stories ambigous enough to do so.
