Your first car - Tuesday, October 09, 2012 11:41 PM ( #1 )
Buying your first car is a big moment in peoples life. What was your first car, and how did you get it.

My first car was a black 1990 Jetta like this one.

It cost me 2500 dollars. My father knew a guy that lived out in the stick and he told my father he had the car and it was great shape so we went out to get it. What I didn't realize was that the car was a stick and I had never driven one before. So my father figured, might as well learn now, then we found a big empty parking lot we switched cars and he said that he would see me at home.

So it took like a half an hour to get comfortable enough with the stick to get on the highway for the two hour drive home. What a great car it was, so many great road trips. It ended up lasting me about ten years before it died on me. Germans make great cars.

My first car was a brand new 1997 Saturn SL1.
Same car as in this picture, same color too.

I was 17 and my parents co-signed on a lease for me.

Like this but in red, a 1991 Subaru Loyale. I had just earned my drivers license when I hit 17 and my dad presented it to me as a Birthday/Christmas gift.  As long as I covered gas, he would pay for insurance and maintenance for up to 3 years.  That first car gives an unparalleled sense of freedom, and I drove it with pride up until it blew a gasket.  Made the mistake of taking it to my uncle June in hopes for a discounted repair bill.  He said it needed an engine, and for $1600, he got one from a scrap yard, and swapped them out, which turned out the replacement was a bad one as well.  Charged another $600 to install another one.  June and Dad got into a heated argument that lasted about a half hour and we ended up leaving the car behind in June's backyard.  Never saw it again.

EDIT:

The first Car i ever drove was:

It was back in 1999, we had a couple of families over for Dinner and 1 of them had this car. I successfully snuck the keys out and drove it for like 7/8 minutes.

1986 Toyota Corolla.  My dad bought it brand new, drove it until my brother turned 15.  Then he had it as his starter car and then I had it from 15-18.  I cared about it so little I would drive through corn fields and use tiny hills as ramps so it would look like the Dukes of Hazard.  Amazingly it withstood all of that and we sold it for $300.

F*ck yea.

When I was 15 years old I found a rotting 1957 Series I Land Rover, bought it off the farmer who hadn't used it in 40 years, restored it for about £300 keeping it with everything original as i couldn't afford to buy a replacement engine etc... But after all of that I couldn't drive it for another 2 years on the road and I couldn't afford to keep it running, but me and my dad took it to land Rover and game fairs, gathered some interest, was featured a few times in a few Land Rover and Classic car magazines gathered the attention of collectors and in the end I made the decision to sell it, one guy made an offer of £31,000 and is now living in South Africa

Ever since I've always been a Land Rover Series fanatic,  the money I earned from the sale enabled me to setup at first my own engineering workshop where I restored old Land Rovers and sold them on and after getting my degree in engineering I upgraded my workshop to a small warehouse as a specialist marine engineer...

My life changed by 1 rusty Land Rover sitting in a field...
