TheRot i don't get it why do american waiters feel entitled to get tips? i mean as far as i know it's the only country where they regularly get tips I don't know about the rest of the world, but here I think things are done differently. Tips are figured into the servers income, so a lot of time they have an hourly rate that's less than minimum wage and are expected (by their employer) to be compensated the difference with tips. Also, tips ensure good service, so it's just good practice if you ever plan on going back to wherever you're eating.

Because they get paid $2.30 an hour. Tips are part of their income.

yeah, i think they actually get taxed on their tips, which are not reported. Somehow they get taxed at 15% of their tips of something, dont know how it works but it doesnt seem right. Its like forcing me to tip, which basically means the $10 lunch i am buying should actually be labeled $11.50 because of mandatory tipping.
All work and no play.. makes odion go something something

This, though I will still tip ****ty or refuse to tip all-together if the service is THAT bad. To my knowledge, waiting is the only profession that gets UNDER minimum wage, not counting illegal immigrants. Many restaurants around here automatically add 15% to your bill total. You really have to watch for that, there have been times I've tipped on a bill that automatically included the tip. I was ****ing pissed when I got home and noticed it on the receipt.

Yep, like the others mention tips are necessary for their income - other countries include tips in the wage. Which I think may be why Europeans are more comfortable than Americans with refusing to pay for a crappy meal. We just withhold tips (which is a whole other discussion?). There's a bunch of other stuff that requires tipping, though, that I think is super awkward - like for haircuts, hotel cleaning staff, valet service, etc.

Always tip your movers. I worked as one for awhile. Tips make or break your week.

Nocturnus32 I am a big tipper. I have tipped up to 50% before. I've easily tipped bartenders over 100, even 200% before. Like I said in the other thread, if you really do a great job, I'll ignore that 15% rule and and hook you up big time. If you don't do a good job I'll ignore that 15% rule and you'll be lucky to get any thing. If you are just average, all you'll get is that 15%.

Tips should be reserved for people who go out of their way to assist/help/whatever you. If a person is just doing their job then that's fine, they're just doing their job. That's why they're being paid. That's the problem with the low wages.

That's why they're being paid. That's the problem with the low wages. Exactly, which is why I feel it's so much easier for a bartender to get better tips. They are able to provide you with free drinks here and there, some barely charging you for any of them. In those situations, I always feel it necessary to tip very well. For a waiter, they can't supply you with free food OR drinks, so it's all about smiling and being quick, which is dependent on how fast the bartender/cooks are. Really, much like everything else, our tip system blows. I never became a waiter but I've known many who have, and have never understood why. You get treated like **** and paid just as well. Not only that, but you go into work never knowing if you'll make a decent amount of money, or if it would have been better to just have stayed home that night.
