What are the main reasons the PS Vita is failing? - Thursday, November 08, 2012 2:12 AM ( #1 )
What are the main reasons the PS Vita is failing? I wanted to know why the PS Vita is failing in the Japanese market. The Vita and the Nintendo 3ds launched at the same price in Japan but the Vita is doing terrible compared to the Nintendo 3ds's debut. What are the factors?

Basically the same thing that almost killed the PS3, lack of games, sony keeps getting these Z list developers on the machine, and once again its suffering from the same problem that the PSP suffers from, its more of a console than a handheld one of the reasons the DS was and to an extent 3ds is successful is because they had or have tons of these quick pick up and play games, the psp never really had that or it never really had much of it, its always had these console games scaled down to handhelds thats the way i saw it

IMO the vita lacks vita only games and by that i mean vita only franchises(thank god for soul sacrifice and tear away) along with lost exclusivity of top selling third party titles like monster hunter. It also doesn't help how they are getting a stiff competition from its main competitor Nintendo that cuts the price of their handled right around the time the vita launched and also purposely delays its major software to match any major incoming releases for the Vita.

I would also blame Sony for all the red tape they put on the device that puts the consumer at an inconvenience such as the lack of including an expensivpreparatory memory card with the handheld etc.

The mass of people won't buy a handheld over 200 bucks, simple as that.

The 3DS was selling bad at 250, dropped to 170 and sold like hot cakes. Remember, 3DS had a worse list of games at launch and even at the pricedrop it didn't have a lot.

There are a few things that drive sales for a handheld in Japan. Monster Hunter, Final Fantasy, that kind of stuff. As long as PSVita doesn't have those and 3DS has...

When you compare 3DS and PSVita games at Metacritic, the PSVita doesn't even do bad in games and how they're rated. Sony needs to drop the price, sell more units and get a larger installed base so 3rd party wants to make more games for it.

Sony might have a trick up their sleeve with 3 months of year PS+ free for the PSVita. The Instant Game collection for PSVita at PS+ will be announced this month.

it's always the price. People doesn't care how many games a device can have if it's expensive. Vita will not sell well until it is at the same price of a 3DS or lower. Just look at past console generations, the cheapest console always wins.

I do, why would I pay good money for a good piece of kit if I have nothing to play on it. If it launched with the kind of line-up the Wii-U has then no doubt it would have been received a lot better.

Talk of a Nintendo fanboy. At best it might not be the genres or IP's YOU like.

But PSVita has good games, in my view even more than the 3DS that basically only has to be bought for Nintendo's 1st party IP's which are the same old same old rehashed Mario, Zelda etc.

To prove you wrong, that the PSVita has good games, some Metacritic screenshots of both systems. So lets see. 3DS is out world wide over 1.5 years. The PSVita is out in Japan just little less than a year and just over a half year world wide. Seems PSVita has a more impressive launch line up and besides that does a more impressive job getting such a wide range of games in a shorter time. What it does miss, is Japanese specific games like Monster Hunter. If you like kiddy games like Nintendogs, or want more of the same Mario and Zelda, the 3DS is for you. If you are an adult that want games and genres for adults, plus the best graphics in a multiplatform released game and play games with dual analogue sticks like shooters AND have the best online/PSN on the go, there is no other way than buying a PSVita.

When I look at the 3DS line up, it makes me go meh. Lets see where the first couple of games brings: oh look Zelda, Mario, more Mario, Starfox, oh more Mario... I've had my Mario, Zelda and Kirby fix on the Wii already in low graphics, not another time on a handheld please...

Now when I look at the PSVita line up, the best version of Rayman Origins, the best version of LBP, a surprising Sound Shapes creative game, Gravity Rush new IP, some good fighters Mortal Kombat/BlazBlue/Marvel vs Capcom 3/Street Fighter X Tekken,  Super Stardust Delta, a portable version of the great Uncharted, Zero Escape, Persona 4, Escape Planet, Motorstorm RC, Wipeout, Hustle Kings, MGS HD Collection, Assassins Creed, Disgaea 3...

And check the future with upcoming stuff exclusive to PSVita with a game like Tear Away and very important: PS+ this month with the instant game collection for the PSVita, there is no doubt. A PSVita over a 3DS any day. That 3D is a sales gimmick anyway and the console is so underpowered that in 2 years time it is really ancient stuff.

then you're just one of those few that are out of the equation!  Even the 3DS was flopping at $250 and it had games, more than the Vita in the same time-frame. PS3 had games and lots of exclusives but it wasn't until the price-cut and slim that it started to sell very well. The Wii had the crappiest library ever for the first few years but it sold the most, why? Because it was the cheapest.

And again, look at past console generations. PS1 had no games when it came out (only crap games like: 2 Xtreme) but it was the best selling console. Why? Because it was the cheapest. N64 and its game were just expensive compared to the PS1 but when the console pulled ahead every devs was supporting it.

And at the end of the day, do a google search and you will see that the Vita has tons of games, specially if you're a weaboo and the device is still flopping even in Japan! You can't deny what it is a fact supported by so many gens. There was one time when the Genesis was cheaper than the the Nintendo consoles and the Sega console started to pick up some real steam even though Nintendo consoles had many more games.

Handhelds in general are dying out. It's all about the convenience of having a phone that plays Angry Birds and the latter these days.

I think the Vita isn't selling because of it's price, it's just not appealing to the customer because all they see is price when comparing it to the competition. But when you take a look at what you get, it's got the games, the dev support for the forseeable future, the nline connectivity, the enguinity in it's design, dualsticks for best gameplay, awesome scree, multitouch controls for those who want that, PSN community, apps, mobile store, movie/video store, music store, camera, social network compatibility, backwards compatible via download purchasing, etc.  Then you  take this list and compare it to the other handhelds then you see the price is jusitfied. But the point still stands, the customer wont take all this into consideration when making a purchase so Sony needs to drip the Vita's price to 199.99$ to remain competitive.

Please. No buttons, no game.

Handhelds aren't dying out if the PSP managed to sell over 70 mln units. A handheld with a pricetag over 200 doesn't sell though. We've seen it with 3DS, we're seeing it with PSVita. The 3DS is selling pretty well after the pricedrop. Around 20 mln units now, after 1.5 year on the market about as much as the Gamecube sold in its whole lifecycle.

Keep gobbling Sony's nutsack in ya mouth. How dare you compare elite Nintendo w/DEAD ass Sony?  Nintendo at $250 sold 8 mil WW before the price cut AND THEY DID NOT HAVE A HOLIDAY EITHER.  Vita, which has more horsepower, is not selling nearly close, stuck at 3 mil, and they have a 250 price option.  Sony is DEAD, its the brand that's the biggest problem.  NOT THE GAMES.  There is nothing unique about the system, no one gives a **** about its ass back touch wannabe nintendo bull****.   People prefer 3DS & smartphone/tablets, there is no room for a PissStation handheld.

Vita will die a worse death than Sega gamegear.  as for PS4, lord have mercy, Wii U and 720 will eat them alive.

Yoshida: PlayStation Vita Sales Are Below Expectations
Posted Tue, 06 Nov 2012

“Consumers now have multimedia devices, such as smartphones,” the outspoken executive noted. “These devices include the ability to play, and it is difficult for us to justify the purchase of an additional machine.”

http://www.pushsquare.com/news/2012/11/yoshida_playstation_vita_sales_are_below_expectations

LMAO

No what this is pointing out, Is That Sony may not make another dedicated Physical control Handheld game machine for the market, and go just touch screen Only.

The PSVita's support most likely will hinge on how many retail chains keep re-ordering stock, Until Than Sony is just going to keep Moving units and keep supporting the best they can. until the stores stop re-ordering the units Sony will keep shipping. Price reduction on the PSVita will be done when Sony feels they can without taking a loss Hit, its about profit, and they already stated it will not be until next year, until they do drop the price. With Yoshida's comments in this Interview i think Sony's Board of directors will not give the go ahead to produce another Dedicated physical control game handheld like the PSVita, as a matter of fact Sony may only go with Xperia Smartphones and Tablets and other hardware made by other companies with PSN and Playstation Mobile support being their only handheld platform from here on out.
that way They still have a Handheld platform in the market , but the touch screen only smartphones and tablets will be their handheld's going forward. 3RD party resources are moving toward that trend anyway.
while the sales of dedicated Handheld game machines like the Nintendo 3DS is great and all, it is in the minority of the Mobile handheld market not the majority.
It takes Nintendo which is the leader in the dedicated Handheld game console market 10 months to reach 16 million units shipped, while fantastic pales in the point of smartphone sales just apple alone sales 15+ million iphones in 1 sales quarter, hell Sony sold over 7.4 million xperia smartphones last sales quarter.
the trends are there, its not that  dedicated handheld gaming will go away, its just that it is no longer the largest market anymore, this happened to the dedicated PDA with smartphones, the same is happening in this market. the dedicated PDA is not gone and dedicated handheld gaming will not go away also.
It just means Nintendo will pretty much be the only one with large sales for such a market of dedicated machines for gaming in the Handheld area of this market.

So you play console sales, not games? The Wii is a supercharged Gamecube weak piece of hardware mate. You love the Wiimote waggle I guess? It was bought for fat sisters and lazy moms that stepped on the Wiifit, nothing else.

It is about the experience for the gamer, not the sales of a system. I am guessing you're at the age of 12 or younger, posting like this.

You're a desperate clown.  What does ONE supposed fan's "arrogance" have to do w/an entire company?  Nintendo is humble as they come, they don't battle with the others for pure power, they just KEEP INNOVATING, while the OTHERS COPY. Now you ****s can try to twist ****, but we all know the truth.  Nintendo came with joystick on N64, then Sony follows w/dualshock.  Nintendo starts rumble, Sony copies. then the sony MOVE bull**** etc etc never ending...

No, Nintendo will always succeed because they are the legit, pure gaming company.  But put them aside, its not about them.  Its about Microsoft whooping that mutha****in ass that pleases me so much.  These arrogant aholes intruded on Nintendo, just bullied and copied their way to success.  At least MS has some ideas of their own, not to mention Microsoft >>>>>>>>>> Sony as a company.
