Why are next gen consoles failing against my aging gaming pc? - Sunday, November 11, 2012 3:21 AM ( #1 )
I really thought specs of the next gen consoles would reveal some new superchip/infrastructure ala ps2 era, but I can't see anything from what's been revealed that they will even compete with a current gen high end gaming spec pc/laptop. Anyone?

They're not released yet.
Consoles are static while PCs are dynamic.
And it's probably cheaper to make PC parts then console parts.

This isn't anything new ,  PC's have always been 1-2 steps ahead of consoles

Because a law that states tech doubles i believe its every 13 months. In the past it was small but now its growing so much faster, and consoles cant keep up.

"Why are next gen consoles failing against my aging gaming pc?"

Define failing...

PC is for generic multiplatform shooters, RTS and MMO/World of Warcraft addicts.

The variety in genres with exclusive stuff is on consoles. Uncharted, God of War, LittleBigPlanet, GT5, Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Forza, Halo...

Show me a game like The Last of Us exclusive for PC too.

Even though the consoles are 6 to 7 years old, they squeeze something impressive like the Last of Us out.

Last gen we saw the XBOX 1 at the end of its lifecycle do games like Fable and Doom 3 on that Celeron 733 Mhz CPU, a Geforce 3 GPU and 64 MB RAM where one needed a pretty powerful PC at that time to run the games in about equal quality.

So that. Sure, you can upgrade a PC every year, which will give a higher resolution than consoles that released a while ago. If you prefer generic stuff, more shooters, more MMO's, be my guest. If you like variety over a broad number of genres consoles are always on top!

the rumored APU on the PS4 is hardly more powerful than a PS3. I'm just hoping that the rumored specs are incomplete and that Sony will pair it with a discrete GPU with cross-fireX for a dual-GPU set-up. But having 2 GPUs on 1 system will not be very cost efficient let alone the power it will consume.

In terms of total costs, console components are actually cheaper to make since they can be built as a single circuit board, and generally a lot more of them are made. Economies of scale apply here.

But like you said, no specs have been released yet. I'd say that any specs "rumoured" before the consoles are officially announced should be disregarded, as they will likely be fabrications by websites looking for hits. From what we've heard from official sources though, the new consoles will be quite impressive. And note that even with components that are roughly equivalent to current high-end PC components, consoles will still be able to output higher quality graphics - due to the fact that they're static, allowing developers to make assumptions about the behavior of the hardware.
