WiiU first update 5GB, no brick protection - Sunday, November 18, 2012 7:22 AM ( #1 )

Like WTH... 5GB update? Sure many people have high speed connections, including myself, but many are surfing on 5Mbit and way below...
And then, many people had bricks because they WiiU shut down while updating. This is a 2012 build console, it should have an brick protection on updates. Heck even the PS3 will not update if it gets a sudden power outage or the update is broken off otherwise.

Nintendo, come on... What is this?

Damn, Nintendo better have some seriously good servers, otherwise it will take days/weeks to download that.  Though I could download a 5GB torrent in about 5 hours.

Live ZombieU stream: http://www.twitch.tv/hecqubus

Edit: the lack of a HUD on screen is really nice, it makes things way more immersive

and the size of that update

When I saw the in store demo, I won't lie I was actually very interested in it. It was so weird seeing nintendo properties being so crisp and clear. And the tablet controller actually feels comfortable.

You didn't see any small children with $300 on hand in line? How weird. No way any them could have been parents either right?

I'm sure afterwards they went and bought some My Little Pony toys.

Edit: I just realised how much this is going to suck for kids on Christmas day. They plug in the console super excited at the thought of playing it, then get stuck with a 3 hour update. The servers will probably be slammed on Christmas as well, it could take ages.

Entertainment companies seem to survey everything but what's general knowledge regarding typical internet speeds, you'd think this would go hand and hand when asking about annual salaries. The average speeds in the U.S alone are around 560K/B - 1MB or something like that.

Go figure.

I didnt look into but if you don't connect it to the internet wont it still be good out the box? Or do you NEED to download it to work?

If you're not forced to download, kids will be fine playing with it on Christmas Day.

If you don't care about playing online or transferring data from your wii to your wii U, then no you really don't need to download right away.

If Nintendo knew this update would be coming out, why the heck didn't they quickly include a disc with the console?

Flip . . . the only issue with this is the lack of brick protection. Some parents might go ahead and update it for their kids, the kids might get fed up waiting and the parents could abort the update halfway through. They might not know that stopping the update can brick the console and they'd end up screwed.

I really dislike any first day game update, firmware updates, and patches, but waiting one hour+ to download before anything can be played is a reality with many PS3 games.

And don't get me started on playing a game you haven't played in a while...try 3 hours of updates (cough) LBP. And I have 10mbps internet.

Pipedream idea.

Nintendo Update Hub.

300MB port base to update your system. At your local Best Buy, Wal-Mart, Gamestop, etc.

Tada.
