Your 2012 gaming highs and lows - Thursday, December 06, 2012 7:09 AM ( #1 )
So 2012 is almost finished and i guess it's been an average year for gaming. There have been some memorable games, but also some real dissapointments. The E3 conferences this year, well . . .

So what were your high's and lows? This isn't strictly for the games you've played, but anything related to gaming in 2012.

Highs:

  • Journey . . . it wasn't just parts of the game, it was the whole thing. The musical score, art style, graphics, unique take on multiplayer and the emotions this game puts your through. It's an experience.
  • The announcement of MGS: Ground Zeroes
  • Far Cry 3. I'm currently playing it and the game is great, easily one of the best games for me this year.
  • Picking up Binary Domain. Great game.
  • Trading in Assassin's Creed 3.
  • In Mass Effect 3, the death of Mordin and Thane. For me, these were done really well especially Thane's death.
  • Seeing proper gameplay of The Last of Us at E3 this year. So Good.

  • Killzone 2 having a higher Meta average than Halo 4.

Lows:

  • Assassin's Creed 3. Just not what i was expecting. It took Ubisoft 3 years to make this game and it wasn't up to par for me
  • Nearly everything being delayed till 2013.
  • Buying Max Payne 3. I didn't enjoy it :/ . . .  it got way to repetitive for me.
  • Wonderbook. How long did Sony spend on it?
  • This year has been pretty forgetful. If it wasn't for indie gaming, PSN and XBLA, the year would have been terrible.

Wow this is incredible. You like dull games (Journey) but not amazing games (AC3 and MP3)... I'm dumbfounded.

My high was having a gay romance between Shepard and Cortez.

What?

You haven't even played Journey and AC3 is dull as hell.

It has unrewarding side missions, no stealth mechanics, guards get suspicious too quickly, economic system is pointless and long-winded, New York and Boston are boring and dull, main missions weren't interesting and didn't come close to the trailers, Connor was to stupid to see Haytham's followers were trying to enlighten him whenever he killed them, crap ending, recruiting assassin's was pointless, too many bugs / glitches and the combat hasn't improved for a game that's been developed for 3 years.

So much fail in that game and it was clearly rushed. The first 6 sequences were great, they flowed well and were interesting. After that you could tell the rest of the sequences were just a mish-mash of ideas that weren't executed properly.

As opposed to a game where all you do is walk? Come again?

AC3 is arguably the worst " most anticipated " release this gen, and I bought all AC titles day one, this is the worst release, dull generic missions, all buildings look the same, even crap story line, and an absurd ending, if it wasn't for the frontier, this game's existence would never be justified, especially with such long development cycle. Now, we will always have the epic ME3 Kon, always, also Tali's death was the best one by miles, really well done.

On topic:

Lows:

Assassin's Creed 3 ending.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 ending.
E3; the big three messed up, but Nintendo screwed up the worst.
Kingdoms of Amalur Reckoning, got it for 15 dollars, and still regret it, pos
Living long enough to see the slow, and painful demise of what once was a great franchise ; Halo ....

Highs:

LOZOOT: 14 years later, played it for the first time, a masterpiece.
RE Revelations: Best RE game this gen
Mass Effect 3: Epic from beginning till before the ending !
Journey: A visual artistic masterpiece, Soundtrack is the best I have ever heard in a videogame.
Ratchet and Clank HD Collection, the original Ratchet and Clank will always be one of my top 3 games of all time.
Best Year this gen multiplats wise imho.

Well I will start with lows:

Lows:
Amy: I thought a game with zombies would at least offer some fun, I was wrong.

Diablo III: As much as I spent getting my PC ready to play this game, I did not invest enough time into it to warrant the money spent. I was expecting more Diablo II and instead I got Diablo Lite.

Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning: I thought I loved 3rd person Rpg's and this looked good. It started out ok but I just couldn't finish it.

PSVita: What a waste of money that was. Should have kept my PS3.

Highs:

Mass Effect 3: Such a great game. I thought the ending was fine.

The Walking Dead episodes 1-5: Wow, this game is story telling gold. This should be pre-installed on every console from now on.

Rayman Origins: So much fun until I hit a game breaking glitch and I could not progress any further. (could also be a low point I guess)

Halo 4: Great story, MP was vastly improved over the previous entries.

Wii U: Had my doubts at first but this console truly is a next gen experience.

ZombiU: I think the reviews were very unfair. This is a true survival horror game we have not seen since the PS1 days of Resident Evil.

I got more but this is turning into a TL:DR.

Highs:

Not being fooled by Nintendo into buying a Wii U.

Getting full-fledged back into PC gaming.  I have re-joined the master race.

Borderlands 2 Co-Op.  Was even better than the first, which was also f*cking fantastic.

Being happy I bought Skyrim on 360 and not PS3.

Lows:

Blu-Ray player (PS3) crapping out.

Buying a Vita thinking it would cure my JRPG fix.

Highs:

Halo 4. This high will last at least until the new year, probably longer.

Borderlands 2. Great co-op fun.

Far Cry 3. Yet to play this, but from all the videos I've seen it looks like something I will enjoy immensely.

Oblivion 5th anniversary edition. Playing this over the summer lull of games at a cost of $15 has been one of my greatest video game decisions. 4 years to go before I get Skyrim with all DLC for $15.

Sony's credit rating

Sony continuing to cater to the hardcore with LBP Karting, Playstation Allstars, and Wonderbook:

Lows:

Mass Effect 3. After playing the first two on the hardest difficulty, the demo didn't impress me at all. The ending complaints confirmed that I wasn't buying it at $60. I haven't gotten it yet, but most likely will only because I've put some much time into the series.

PS3: Horrible year for the PS3. The 90 minutes it took to complete Journey was good, but not good enough to compensate the $100 I spent fixing my PS3 last year. Zero retail PS3 exclusives purchased this year.

Console failures. PS3 failed and my second Xbox 360 I bought online for $60 also failed.

How quick does SONY want to forget about the PS3?
