Next-gen longevity?

So I've been curious about this. Do you think next gen will last as long or longer than this gen? I ask this because on hand the amazing tech we're currently seeing is helping future proof things and thus could give us a longer cycle. You also have this idea of tech kind of reaching a ceiling that'll prolong things because we've reached "good enough. On the flip side I feel what allowed this gen to last as long as it did was the revolution in online/hd ect. But as those revolutions become the norm, the revolutionary aspect that gave it long life isn't their so the tech doesn't last as long. So I guess itcould go either way, thoughts?

I don't mind if it lasts as long. Just let the games run smoothly with locked FPS and no jaggies, even if they are 720p.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooo whoooop noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo I want new consoles to buy every 5 - 6 years. Anything longer I hate to wait. Besides that all tech has gone old after 5 years. Like not a bit, but too old almost. So 5-6 years is the sweet spot. Until we get streaming game devices only that needs no upgrade on the hardwarepart at home that is. Less fun too than own consoles with nice specs, but well

If I lasted 6 years happily, I can do it again if games look and perform better.

Most likely longer. The Internet changed everything and the notion of a system being update remotely isnt far fetched. We've only seen a sample of this precedent thus far

UnSelf Most likely longer. The Internet changed everything and the notion of a system being update remotely isnt far fetched. We've only seen a sample of this precedent thus far That is just one part of the story. This gen lasted so long as both MS and Sony sold this gens consoles at a (big) loss at launch. Combine that with the recession hitting since 2008 and they just needed more years to recover losses and try to make some profit. Next gen both won't take such a large hit in selling a unit with so much loss. PS3 is said to be sold at launch even with close to or over 300 USD loss per unit. Won't happen again. Plus, this gen needed some extra stuff to keep the sales going a bit, like Kinects release. Actually I see next gen going 6 years again, that is, if the economy won't fack up with a big dip in the coming 6 years.

I don't think so. While the Microsoft and Sony consoles ought to be a good few further steps ahead of the WiiU in terms of specs, I don't think they'll really be a massive improvement on this generation. They'll probably partially satisfy the graphics whores for 2-3 years and there'll be some moderately good improvements in what game developers will be able to do such as better AI, games on a bigger scale and again giving players even more options in games, but I don't really expect much else and I imagine most people will look to the PC market to see what's happening as they watch it shift even further ahead.

Personally for me, the longer the cycle of the next gen consoles, the better. I only buy new systems once it's on the market for about 3 or 4 years. That gives the console enough time to build up a good catalog of games, and it also helps me decide which console I want in terms of exclusives. It wouldn't be a great idea for me to get a console at launch because I can't trust that the company will publish enough exclusives in the future. Such as Microsoft. Sure they were known to have a good "early phase" because of games like Gears of War and Halo3. But not too many other notable exclusives came out that impressed me personally.

All generations will last a roughly similar amount of time. As with Moore's law, hardware changes at a rather consistent rate Whether certain random consoles outlast their respective generations (PS2) is irrespective of this and simply based on popularity and game development cost.
