4k and OLED.

Just like LCD and plasma ushered in hd tv, 4kand oled are supposed to be the next dominate force in 5 to 10 years. As a BIG movie buff I thought we could discuss them and their use in our home movie watching. I recently read an article on cnet "why 4k is stupid" talking how 4k in the movie theaters makes perfect sense but in the home is just impractical. Our eyes can't see the diference unless using a 100+ inch. It was just an interesting read and bet on oled being the best and most practice in the long run. So how do y'all feel about 4k vs oled?

I agree with CNET. In the home, it's pretty pointless. Add onto that the fact that we'll still be struggling to support native 1080p in the next gen of consoles, it's just not worth it. Higher res graphics on the same size monitor isn't like FPS, the higher the better. There's a point where you have greatly diminishing returns. 4k is beyond that point.

4k is a resolution. OLED is a display type. The two are not directly comparable and in many cases overlap in usage. In truth the difference between 1080p and 4k is visible at 6ft. on a 55' display. Not only that, but an increase in resolution provides other added benefits such as increase brightness and contrast, which are more noticeable to the human eye than the actual resolution increase. Regardless of what you think, 4k will be adopted in homes even if it is for the sole purpose of not having to compress and/or reformat movies as 4k is a filming standard. OLED should have a good run, but will eventually be pushed out by QLED. That is only a matter of how fast the price comes down.

I'm skeptical, since I remember being told that 1080p was meant to be indistinguishable from 720p on screens less than 40", so I don't think I'd have space or money for a screen size that justified 4K over 1080p. I just want next gen consoles to have solid high framerates without tearing. Native 1920 x 1080p locked and v-synced at 60fps would be great (or smooth 30fps with more detail). That would look significantly better than current consoles, where most games aren't even 720p. That would also supposedly make games take longer to develop, so I shudder to think how long a game like Versus would take to develop in 4K. From a marketing point of view, I'm sure 4K would be popular considering Apple's retina displays and cameras that shoot 14+ megapixels.

People have said the same thing about 1080p, that you can't see the difference between it and 720p on a display smaller than 40" and they were wrong of course. 5" smartphones are already coming with 1080p displays and you can easily see that 1080p looks better than 720p even on small smartphone displays. 10" tablets like the iPad and Nexus 10 are coming with crazy High-Res displays and they look great, much better than older tablets with 720p and 1080p resolutions. Panasonic recently demoed a 20" "tablet" with a 4k resolution and it looks amazing. So yeah, technology will move forward even if some people won't like it.

Time will tell. I do think 4K and eventually 8K will last longer than the 3D fad did.

I think you may be confusing the maintained sharpness of images on zoom in and out due to high pixel density. An image viewed at its native resolution on an original iPad looks just as sharp as an image viewed at its native resolution on the iPad 3. Welcome to the technical placebo effect age.

Is the technology wanted/needed by consumers or is it simply another excuse to raise the prices of TV's? Or better yet, to keep the prices from falling too low. I still haven't gotten on the LCD/Plasma bandwagon. I can't justify $300-$400 when my current 40 lb TV works fine:p
Welcome to next gen:

I really want a 21:9 curved OLED monitor :-D About 4k, it'll be noticeable if you sit close enough. I'd imagine that PS4/720 will play video at 4k, however stick with 1080p60 for games due to the amount of GPU power required to render 4x the pixels at 4k. [Edit] Here's a more accurate representation of 4k, Ubersampling is a essentially Super Sampling, in this case it renders the image at 4k (4x1080p), and outputs it to the monitors default (1080p), this is the highest quality AA available. A $600 GPU brought down to 35fps for a 2 year old game. I suppose it would be possible if PS4/720 are packing some serious GPU power, but developers would be in a dilemma, sacrifice game graphic quality for a resolution that 1% of the population has? Or make something that looks miles ahead of current gen and stick with 1080p.
