The Unfinished Swan is arguably my favourite game of the generation - Thursday, January 17, 2013 7:59 AM ( #1 )
I finished The Unfinished Swan last night. Yes, replaying it could not have quite the same mystery as it partly relies on an element of surprise. But it is a surreal fairy tale meets modernism kind of masterpiece that should be shoved down the throat of every lazy hack writer who claims that videogames are inherently creativity sapping and evil. In a fair world, I think that people should still be talking about it in many decades to come. I found it more utterly beautiful than any game that I have ever played. It's like walking around the mind of some great architectural and artistic genius. It's so simple to play. You have a brush and you throw paint and water splashes around so that you can see where you need to go in order to reveal new pages of a storybook. By laying black paint on previously unseen objects you really craft the atmosphere of much of the environment yourself because, once you know roughly where to go, it's up to you how much you decided to keep on splashing paint around some surprisingly large areas. You do not use paint to destroy foes. You must play it- it is a modern classic that is so stark yet playful in its presentation.
