EA: We need to appeal to mobile gamers for Dead Space 3

EA's latest statement on Dead Space 3: “We need to make sure we’re expanding our audience,” he said. “There are action game fans, and survival horror game fans, who are 19 and 20, and they’ve only played games on their smartphones, and micro-transactions are to them a standard part of gaming. It’s a different generation. So if we’re going to bring those people into our world, let’s speak their language, but let’s not alienate our fans at the same time.” I get the idea of wanting to appeal to new customers, but this is pretty surprising. Also, survival horrow fans who've only played games on their mobile . . . DAT BULLSH*T. They don't want to alienate fans but Dead Space 3 looks like it is, it looks completely different compared to number 1. You guys think appealing to mobile gamers will become more of a priority for developers, or is this EA just f*ckin up another franchise in the search of more money?

I played the first two, and I have no interest in this game. EA is making a mistake by dumbing down games.

ZombieNinjaPanda "micro transactions are to them a standard part of gaming" And it keeps getting worse and worse gentlemen. They see people use micro transaction in Angry Birds and they immediately want a piece of the pie. The thing about these micro transactions is that people use them on free games, these little transactions aren't much of a concern because people haven't paid for the game. With Dead Space 3 people are going to pay $60, not get the game for free. If they wanted to do this they should make a brand new Dead Space smart phone game.

Gamers are so disconnected from the actual business side of gaming that it's not funny. You guys think he's talking to you? He's talking to the investors and chairmen of EA, the ones who have analysts come in and blase them with $-related facts like that massive amounts of cash to be gained for mobile markets, etc. Every publisher is run by men who are NOT gamers, men who think only of the return of the product. Sure there may be guys on the board who still are dedicated to making sure a certain level of pedigree is maintained with released products, but in general, the guys who are funding various gaming projects don't care if they make the devs alter a game's formula from what it started out with to what it ends up (Mass Effect to Mass Effect 3 for example), as long as there is a return on their investment. Welcome to reality gentlemen, Money > Ethics.

I keep wondering when companies like EA will go bankrupt.
Won't happen anytime soon, they still hold exclusive licensing for FIFA, NHL and NFL. Each game is effectively a rehash of the previous year so most of the expenditure probably goes towards maintaining ownership of their licenses. Fifa 2013 sold close to 5m units in a week, shocking really. Outside of that they have a surprisingly huge catalog of acclaimed titles such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect. Safe to say they are here to stay for the foreseeable future.

Lame excuse is lame. The games these kids buy microtransactions from don't come with a $60 price tag, they're free games. You gotta get them to pay $60 for them. Even those kids would rather not pay for microtransactions, even moreso after a $60 price tag.

Yeah, pretty sure this'll be another company on the boycott list for me even though they publish so many games nowadays.
