Is my computer monitor really 1080? Or a rip off. - Friday, February 01, 2013 3:59 PM ( #1 )
Okay, I have a computer monitor that I play my PS3 on. I'm using an HDMI cable obviously, and the monitor is said to be at 1080p. But I don't understand, why doesn't it look crispy, and why are the colours so dry? I went to a Sony Store and saw another tv just about the exact same size but different brand. It's a 22' inch by the way. It had a PS3 on display. I was playing infamous 2 on it and the graphics had this very sharp crispy look with really vibrant/beautiful colours. But my TV doesn't even look like that.

I don't know why. Is it because I'm using a computer monitor as a screen? My friend told me that if you use an HD computer monitor with a PS3, then it's actually 1060p, not 1080p. Can someone please help me? Did I get ripped off?

Also, there's this option on my monitor that says "sRGB" or something like that. I find that the games look so much nicer on that setting. But does it harm my screen in any way? Because it's bright, and I'm scared that it may damage the brightness on my tv.

Most likely not your monitor. Post what monitor you have. And never go by what demos you see in store, those are set to demo mode, purposes in the store, to make things look better than what they truly look like.

I don't know what your friend is talking about. I have an Asus VH236H and this monitor is absolutely terrific for use with the PS3/360 and games that require low latency. It runs in 1920x1080 resolution.

sRGB is just a color mode (/color space). You might have other color modes, like Standard, or Gaming. I recommend using "Gaming" if you have it.

It shouldn't damage anything.

Um, try changing around your color settings and mode. See if there's any setting that you like. Your monitor should also be able to report the resolution of what you're viewing back to you, as will the PS3 in the system menu.

If it really truly looks bad, then you might just have a cheap monitor.

Can you identify the model for us?

EDIT: Not sure why I didn't mention this but you probably don't want to use sRGB for gaming. I'm surprised games look better on that setting for you, sRGB is not meant to make things look bright and vibrant. A lot of people who use photo tools use that color space to get an accurate idea of what prints will look like

It's a philips 244E monitor. It has 1 hdmi port at the back, no avi cables thing. I'm surprised by a company like Philips actually made this garbage.

well, double check your ps3 settings making sure that all the settings are marked (1080p, 720p, 480p). If you only have 1080p checked, and a game is only able to output 720p, it will revert back to 480p which makes games look like crap.

I hope you're not just being fooled by tweaked store display settings. They typically run overly sharpened and saturated pics to give everything an unnatural "pop" to catch the customer's eye.

You realize you can change settings on the monitor itself right? You did that? Also your friend doesn't know crap. Computer monitors were 1080 long before TVs ever were. And as smokey said, just because your monitor supports 1080 doesn't mean the games will they'll downscale to 720 the second you play them.

monitors tend to have crappy scalers since they are always heavily dependant on the GPU or graphic accelerator to do the upscaling and when you don't use them on their native resolutions they tend to look blurry and ugly. Just do the test yourself. Don't you have a PC (or Latop with HDMI) on your house to where you can hook up the monitor and run it natively?

The PS3 games that have scalers are through software and they are equally bad so this is a lose-lose situation for you. Sorry.

Okay, I think I figured out the problem. The reason that it doesn't look that great is because I didn't put it on sRGB mode. On the PS3 there's a setting called sRGB limited or full. I set it to full and everything looks much nicer. Should I keep it this way or will it somehow harm my monitor? My monitor also has the same option for sRGB.

No, you aren't going to harm your monitor. See Satanas' post above.
Still odd to me that sRGB is better for you, but, if it works for you, then it works for you.  A friend of mine uses his this way also, and he has been using it that way on his monitor for the last 2 years.

It's true, but MidnytRain said it better. But yeah, stores set their monitors, HDTVs, etc to a demo mode, or tweaked the hell out of it to make it look better, plus taking into account the stores lighting, space, etc... all play a factor as well.

Hey I just want to thank everyone here in that posted, it helped a lot. Thanks.

I won't be getting a big screen tv in a long time due to limited space for the other tvs, so I'm stuck with this one. But it'll do for now.

You make do with what you got bub. If it works for you now, then more power to you. Stuff can always be acquired later on down the road when it best suites you.

What? There is no such setting. Are you talking about HDMI RGB (NOT sRGB) Full Range vs Limited Range? Well, you can try Full Range and if the black of your PS3's background looks noticeably better (read: darker) then keep it on Full. If it does not look better or it looks worse, keep it on limited. Same for Super White.

If I recall correctly, most monitors tend to have issues with limited range RGB. You'll almost certainly notice things look better with full range on your monitor.

I think he is just referring to the RGB full range setting. At least that's what I was gathering from his post earlier.
