Edge: New xbox = no used games, always online & Blu Ray - Wednesday, February 06, 2013 6:11 AM ( #1 )
The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray discs and new Kinect

http://www.edge-online.co...-discs-and-new-kinect/

Microsoft’s next console will require an Internet connection in order to function, ruling out a second-hand game market for the platform. A new iteration of Xbox Live will be an integral part of Microsoft’s next console, while improved Kinect hardware will also ship alongside the unit.

Sources with first-hand experience of Microsoft’s next generation console have told us that although the next Xbox will be absolutely committed to online functionality, games will still be made available to purchase in physical form. Next Xbox games will be manufactured on 50GB-capacity Blu-ray discs, Microsoft having conceded defeat to Sony following its ill-fated backing of the HD-DVD format. It is believed that games purchased on disc will ship with activation codes, and will have no value beyond the initial user.

Our source has also confirmed that the next Xbox’s recently rumoured specs are entirely accurate. That means an AMD eight-core x64 1.6GHz CPU, a D3D11.x 800MHz graphics solution and 8GB of DDR3 RAM. As of now, the console’s hard drive capacity is said to be undecided, but Microsoft’s extended commitment to online delivery suggests that it will be the largest unit it has put inside a console to date

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

Unlike Nintendo, Microsoft is continuing to invest heavily in motion-control interfaces, and a new, more reliably responsive Kinect will also ship alongside the next Xbox. Sony’s next-generation console camera system is said to have a similar set of features, and is expected to be discussed at the company’s PlayStation event on February 20.

Thoughts?

The ban on used games pisses me off and really worries me about the future. If this is true, why won't Sony do this? Personally i'll be surprised if locking used games for 3rd parties will happen, but i could see it used for MS first party games.

If even some of that is true, I won't be buying. I can't support that kind of crap.

If it's true, it won't be just MS. And if that's so, I don't give a damn WHAT comes out, if I can't play my consoles offline, I WILL NOT BUY EITHER ONE.

There has to be a price drop in games if I were to invest in the systems and couldn't resell games

I could imagine there was collusion amongst third parties to get MS and Sony to implement technology in their consoles to ban used game sales.

@Kon - i'm making threads on gaming, in a gaming forum to discuss gaming.

Nahhh I still think all those "no second hand games" rumor is bull****.  I don't see MS nor Sony doing that.  Not that I care since I buy new and I would get any of the systems even if they do something like that, as long as there are good games, but I really think that specific thing is BS.

If this goes down they immediately cut at least twenty five percent of their current user base.

Not good, hoping not true.

What's wrong with discussing rumours? They generate discussion which is a good thing.

that's the part that scares me because with the bunch of idiots we have on this planet this crap might take off and become an industry standard just like the DLC milkage.

If it does not happen this generation it will at some point i think... gamespot alone has taken a huge chunk of revenue from publishers and developers from reselling used games... one reason why games are selling less as well in sale figures... not because the games is not good but because people can save money and get used game... and as time goes on when they final cut the price of a game to bump up sales... the stores have already slashed the price of the used game a week or two before cashing in before the reduction price of the new game...

I can see why this has become an issue for publishers and developers...

I don;t think it is right at all... but it looks like they have to do something to try and stop the leaking of huge profits to 2nd stores..

Ubisoft is a huge pusher of being online to play the games.  they are not the only ones either there are many other that require you to be online..

I think the system that demands online all the time if they both do it... I think this is what will happen...

Everyone will cry foul at first and than when the systems launches... 95% of them will get the systems anyways..
specially those that are thinking now of buying it day one.

If one system does it...  I think gamers will prefer the one system that does not do this and the companies will prefer the more secure system also giving them an edge..

I also think if one company would do it over the other MS would do this over Sony

I think we may see something like sony's protection on their movies when the sound cuts out...   I think we will see that on their used games at the most if both system do this...

That all said... one thing that does strength these rumors are...

Gamestop has said if this is does they would look at becoming a retro gaming retailer...  And just this week they announced that they were closing 500 stores..

I agree and disagree. On one hand if people don't want the game, they should have the right to sell it, on the other, if it is sold, the publisher of the game losses money.

So they will do something like this. But then again, I'm sure someone will find a way around it also. Never ending circle.

Well it wouldn't surprise me. Microsoft has never bothered to hide the fact that they love screwing their base. Some people just refuse to take off the rose-colored glasses. Some of that sounds like what they already do on PC. How they lock games to your ID.
