Developer thatgamecompany was bankrupt when it shipped ‘Journey’ - Thursday, February 07, 2013 5:52 PM ( #1 )
Indie developer thatgamecompany is well known for delivering interesting, emotional titles on downloadable marketplaces. Even with a solid reputation and impressive game library, the company was bankrupt when it shipped last year’s Journey.

Main man Jenova Chen broke this news during a presentation at DICE, where he discussed his philosophy on game design and some facts about his team’s games. One particularly interesting slide centered on a letter from a 15-year-old player whose time with the PSN-exclusive title changed her life.

I just hope this sheds a better light on video games as an entertainment medium, among the latest controversy concerning games and violence.

No wonder, their games are no fun.

I wish they hadn't been locked in with Sony for their games. Would gladly re-buy Flow and Flower on Steam, and would love to play Journey.

I think they are done now... it was just a 3 game deal what not... I think they are free and open now to make games for anyone... but I could be wrong...

It is a real shame that they're stuck developing games exclusively for PSN. I just can't bring myself to actually purchase something from there.

Yes, this was their last PS exclusive game, from now on, TGC can develop on whichever platforms they see fit, the more people that get to experience their games, the better.

@FAT MAN - Yeah, they're done. I asked them awhile back on their FaceBook page if Journey will ever come to PC, and they said it was the last of their 3-game deal with Sony. Sony unfortunately owns the IP and everything.

Why?

Combination of laziness and apathy I guess. I can't really get into single player console games for some reason. I just feel too disconnected from the experience with a controller in my hands. It's strange.

Sony would be smart to try and get them to agree to another exclusive deal contract.  All of their games have been hits in one way or another.

I can't even begin to comprehend this type of mentality when it comes to games. Different strokes I guess.

Sony would be smart to grab them... even buy them out or make a longer term deal... business wise yeah that would be very smart... if not I think they will end up getting picked up by someone else... 3rd party or even MS but I don;t know they don;t seem to want to buying to other developers...

gamers wise... if they make great games the more the merry....

Well, it's not all games. I've been able to sit through a few PS3 games (Uncharted 2, 3 and MGS4), but the bar for entry into my PS3 game collection is a lot higher than my Steam game collection, but that's a story for another time.

Either way, I'd buy a TGC game if it came to Steam in a heartbeat.

They should develop only for PC, where indie games are much much more better received.

Or develop for as many platforms as they can so they can avoid going bankrupt as they did when developing PS3 games.
