Most Overhyped VG Developers.

Self explanatory , in your opinion, which video game developers are given more credit than they deserve .

Mine are :

1- Platinum Games/ Crytek.
2- Ninja theory.
3- Rockstar North.
4- Bethesda Game Studios.
5- Visceral Games.

Excluded the COD ones, since I never played any COD games after MW2.

You know what man... I thought Bethesda and maybe rockstar North should not be one there but looking up their games and seeing them on paper.. I have to agree with you..  even though they have both made some good games the hype on them are over done...




Mind you I loved Fallout and Red dead and think they were some of the best games this generation... but I do agree with you...




That said... I hope that they do live up to he hype. Cause that would be awesome for gamers and I do think they may have it in them to just that...
Well maybe not ninja Theory or Platinum games but the others still have a great chance...

Gearbox.

One well acclaimed game out of fourteen years of mediocrity and they're compered to some of the best developers in the industry. However with Aliens: Colonial Marines, people are slowly remembering "Hey these guys have made nothing but garbage for almost two decades, why do we praise them again?"

Not just that game... they attach their name to crap lately Duke Nukem...  I know the history of it... buy why put your name on that...
The Aliens game was a HUGE let down.. I was looking forward to slugging it out in the trenches with Acidpack on this game... but they really messed this game up..  He was telling em all the horrible things about it...


I mean in a business where your name is on every game you make or trying to sell, you are also depending on your name to have some dependability or history of great games...


I know I am going to be way way more careful when it comes to buying anything with their name on it... No day one pick ups from me...

I know they are closed now but Vigil games were pretty damn good... I think for such a young team... and for them to be with THQ a drowning publisher imagine if they were with a publisher that could really back them up...  I hope they do well at Crytech USA

I agree with Vigil games too, enjoyed the first Darksiders more than the sequel though. Always thought that Nautilis/feelplus/Mistwalker is/are underrated, they never got the credit they deserve. SCE/Guerrilla Cambridge made lots of great titles as well.

Bethesda - Bad game design, casual Rpg's......Guerilla games - Overrated and not worthy of the praise(for the time being).

By the literal definition, Naughty Dog. They put out some decent quality but Naughty Gods anyone? Nuff said. 

Bethesda definitely. They release buggy games and are praised for it. Their writing is mediocre also.

Bungie most definitely. They've only done Halo (save for Marathon that no one played) and everyone is creaming over this new game that we know nothing about, but if you told me it was Haze in an open world I'd have believed you.

There are a lot of them out there, like, Capcom,. But 3 of them easily top such list.

1. Ninja Theory - they need help in so many ways and take credit for the work of those that help them and then bad mouth them
2. Bethesda - can't develop a quality engine to save their life; most bugs per game hands down
3. EA (any indvidually owned development team) - ****ty, depressing work environments; make employees sign NDAs so they (or their spouses) can't complain; focus on money only; have bought and ruined multiple dev companies that had potential
4. Capcom - develop every game with the intent of selling crap DLC and never really supporting their titles; have IPs that they run into the ground over and over and over and over and over more than anyone else I can think of
5. Square Enix - have lost their way and primarily publish now; sell old titles at the most ridiculous of prices compared to anyone else to fund games that have been in development since the beginning of this generation; lackluster and boring games that don't even come close to living up to the past nor recognizing how gaming has evolved.

You are bang on when it comes to Capcom and Ninja Theory, and with square enix, to me it seems that ever since the merger of square enix it seems like they have been doing exactly what you said..  Publishing games more and bring back old remakes... The Final Fantasy games have taken a  huge hit in quality I think.

I came in here specifically looking for this type of answer. Anyway, as for Gearbox, I don't think they're bad devs. The success of Borderlands and its sequel SHOWS they are capable of making a good original game. I think they just need to stop trying to salvage games that are well past their expiration date and just let them die in development hell. Otherwise they become associated with bad content that should have never been released, a la Aliens and Duke Nukem.

I prefer Crash and Jak/dax over Uncharted series. But seeing as Uncharted 2 is alot of peoples fav game this gen - Along with their track record(never a bad game)...they do deserve at least some of dat hype

I don't think they're overhyped. I don't think I've ever heard anyone praise them except for wannabe gangsters talking about "haters" and other trash.

Bethesda buggy ass games same with ubisolf

Maybe Netherrealm for laggy ass lobbies

I hardly think any developer is overrated, but if I had to choose one I would pick Valve. 

• Ubisoft Montreal - Their games always look good in trailers and on paper but they fill their games with crap to extend the length of the game. They always get a pass on it as well. And for every good game they make, they make 3 crap ones.
• Gearbox - After Borderlands 2 released people thought they were amazing. All past sins were forgotten.
• Bungie - Halo is good, but they haven't done anything else for years. Why so much praise when they haven't taken risks like others devs. Ok, Destiny looks like a bit of a risk, but they've signed a 10 year contract. 
• Crytek - Games look amazing but to me that's all. Gameplay, narrative and story fall short.
• Guerilla Games - See Crytek above. 

I have to disagree about Platinum. Vanquish was crazy and had solid gameplay throughout. Bayontetta had great combat, most devs creating a hack and slash would kill for a combat system like that.

I don't think they're overhyped. I don't think I've ever heard anyone praise them except for wannabe gangsters talking about "haters" and other trash.

They are very well liked by many on the front page, especially their games.  Every time I see someone talk about the writing in Enslaved I do a facepalm, or the combat in Heavenly Sword or anything like that.  


My point being, any hype for them is too much.  I wouldn't mind seeing their management go away and replaced with people who know how to manage and make games.  Their programmers are fine.  They do what is needed of them.  It's the managers I would love to see trashed.
