the advantage of day one console purchases? - Tuesday, February 19, 2013 2:45 PM ( #1 )
I've never purchased a console day one, mostly because I was young and couldn't afford it. though I know nothing about the current gen I ask considering
joining the festivities of purchasing the nextgen of my choice day one, sort of as a gift to my younger self. that's neither here or there, I want to know why so many of my n4g family wait in line to get their console day one? they have nearly no games and the hardware isn' tested on a large scale. is it to show support to the brand or the alluring party grade hype of the birth of a console ,like new years, or something else not mentioned

Cannot answer since I've never bought a console day one.  I've also never waited in line to buy a video game or technology device.  I shop online primarily.

The only consoles I've ever bought launch day were first versions.  PS1, Xbox 1, Wii 1.  Xbox 1 and Wii actually had decent launch games though, Halo and Twilight Princess.

I most likely won't get the next Xbox right away.  Unless it has some really nice feature that the 360 doesn't have, I don't see the point until it starts coming out with games that are too powerful to release on the 360 as well.

this is actually precisely why I thought day one purchases come off as fanatic or plain  hype driven poor personal financing.. but this time around I'm waiting for this gen to be over

There is no advantage in buying day one you only loose that way! #1 you over pay #2 you over pay and #3 you over pay! Plus you go through a pretty hefty software drought.

There is only one advantage, and that is if the company is stupid. Example: Bought my ps3 day 1. I have all the features. People buying it now, have half the features I have (Save for Sony removing my linux capabilities and other stuff).

I think they will have games to play on them fairly soon after launch, but I'll be waiting for awhile before buying either of them.

I bought all my Console's Day 1, and am yet to regret any of it.

But, if we all were smart and didn't bought any Console of Day 1, there won't be no Console.

I don't know, I just like jumping in early and be able to enjoy first gen games day one.

And beside, if no one buys them at launch then 3rd party's are only gonna take even longer to release more games. I mean, you guys think the Vita's library is going to improve if people don't buy the system first? This is kinda like a gamble when you think about it but PS1, PS2 and PS3 didn't disappoint and I only expect the same thing from the PS4. Launch tittles are often fun so I don't have any issues and the hype and excitement of a new console only makes them be better. The more people that jump in early the better it'll be for everybody.

The only advantage is that you can brag to all your friends that you have the newest console.

Yep only real reason...   I was disappointed to when they removed that feature as well... or the Chip to give full backwards play or the memory cards...

I have a fat60 and I love that it has those memory card slots... it is so easy to move information back and forth and to to view pictures and and watch movies off it is awesome...

I am surprised they took it out when they don;t cost a whole lot and they are fantastic to have....

That said most first adopters get screwed over... things from poor quality of boxes... after the first redesign of console a system is most time better... in many way...

Smaller, Cooler, Cheaper, Established Library, Kinks worked out from for run, sometime better improvements...

Look at the 360 it started off with a 20GB HDD for the Elite and No HDD for the core package.... it also had no wifi in it and MS wifi adapter was an insane price... I can't remember how much it was but I just hardwired it...  that said I hard wire all the consoles I just prefer it... I am not a fan of wifi too much...

Once we had an electrical storm and the power would go off and on like some one flicking a light switch... and more than once it had done something to the router cause it rest it and made it an open connection... it old happened after that type of power outage... but I had to change the router... people using the wifi... that bothers me cause you don;t know what they are downloading... eh...

Well anyways back on topic.. yea.. most times early adopters get screwed.....

I think Kon and wishingW3L nailed it, just being able to say to friends "I have it" and being able to sit down as early as possible with these new games the second they come out and being one of the first batch of people to have the console is the fun of it. But economically it's not really worth it since newer cheaper and more efficient models are usually announced about 12-24 months later and there are (obviously) more games out then. There's always a software drought.

thats a scary mentality thiugh. it sounds to me like your saying "lets buy this product so the company can reward us with that" being sort of "everyone do thier part" proposition. I think the responsibility of quality software should be placed in the company, not the consumer for waiting to test the waters. like whats happening now with wii U, nintendo imo should work quickly to reach out 3rd party devs and push wanted software, its not our responsibility to purchase a wii to help them out

The one response to that that invalidates his arguement is "I have sex.... with a woman.".

There is no rational reason to buy a console on day one. But then again, we're human and anything but rational.

Boils down to the same reason we buy any other product early, such as the latest Galaxy phone, iPhone or iPad - we want the latest tech as early as possible, and buying on launch day allows you to fulfill that desire.  Why buy a game on day one? Why buy any game as long as it costs £40,-? Could just wait a year or two until it drops to £5,-, as that would be the rational thing to do.

Exactly. I love technology and like having the latest gadgets.
It makes no financial sense to buy anything on release day because the price will always go down, with some exceptions.

I plan on getting the PS4 and/or the 720 on day one. While some of you are crying about not buying a console day one, I will be playing the newest games on the newest systems.
