CVG: Durango reveal in April - rumours - Friday, February 22, 2013 7:09 AM ( #1 )

Industry expects Microsoft's response to PS4 in April
One-off event pencilled in for April, according to publishing and development sources

A growing number of developers and other industry professionals, some of which are Sony employees, have told CVG that Microsoft will reveal its next generation Xbox for the first time in April.

One senior Sony official, who asked not to be named, said he was informed that the PS4 showcase in New York had "at first caught Microsoft off-guard". "We definitely ruffled some feathers," the person said.  It is said that Microsoft will now showcase its console at a one-off media event in early April - though it is expected that discussion about future tech would be an inevitability if Microsoft engineers and developers attend GDC in March.

Thoughts? And did Sony force this or was this always going to happen?

I definitely think there will be a reveal before E3. Maybe some sh*t on MTV. I wouldn't be surprised that, if there is a reveal, they'll book a theatre big enough for 2000+ people.

I think they will. Or will in March. I can't see them waiting till June for E3, they will wan to get more hype before E3 if they are planning on a late fall, early winter release.

Was already going to happen, Sony hasn't changed anything about it.

Microsoft revealed the 360 in 2005 at some MTV show in May if I remember right. So April/May probably this time again, just before E3 so they can have the buzz go straight into that event.

Thoughts, not sure. After 360 had a great start IMO with Gears 1 MP getting me really into 'next gen' back then, and some fun stuff after, MS let exclusive games dry up, and the switch to PS3 around the end of 2008 and slowly further in 2009/2010 was inevitable.

Not sure if MS is able to return with fresh and exciting new IP's for 720 this time around or if they'll pull a boring Halo 5 and another Forza and Fable which turned meh...

Seeing how Sony even in 2013 is still pushing new IP's for the PS3 and MS let 360 die with Kinect selling to kids, it seems Sony can remain its passion for games. As I bought a PSVita too at launch, which gets an even more integrated roll with the PS4, MS needs to pull a lot of strings right to get me in again.

Hype! Can't wait to see if MS counters Sony's ram situation.

That actually sounds like a better month to reveal next gen compared to february. We all know what to expect; Kinect 2 played by celebrities, cloud gaming, Epic games exclusive, Molyneux game, Halo 5 maybe, a joke about getting to actually see the console, a Cirque de Soleil performance...

Just look to the past and you will see the future.

MS is smart. I strongly believe this new console will be more powerful than the PS4. Time will tell.

As of right now, it apparently isn't, at least not as far as RAM bandwidth, which is a very important aspect of a system. They will have to modify it and then reveal it. (Which is totally possible, but I donno how viable that sort of stuff is.)

Having said that, I personally think MS will use a comparable CPU but better GPU than Sony, but this is completely a hunch

And April's too far, I want them to have it like...now

I don't think MS will care too much about the RAM difference for the first 2 -3 years of the the next gen race.

Devs will play to the lowest common denominator when making multiplats, games will look the same on PS4 and 720. The average consumer won't see big differences between the 3rd party games, combine this with the tactic that MS' console will probably cost less, they will end up selling a sh*t load. Why buy a PS4 when you can play Resident Evil 7 on a 720 for $50-75 less?

That's what i think anyway.

* based on rumors of older devkit hardware...

The devkit rumors also are speaking about a GPU that isn't as powerful as the PS4 rumored one.

Then again, I would be shocked if MS would let Sony have the better running 3rd party games as that was what the 360 sold basically to gamers, at least early this gen.

Yeah my mistake I should have mentioned all based on speculation. I think MS will alter some aspect of the console if these rumors are true

This kind of thinking hasn't exactly won the console war. PS3 has sold faster than the xbox whilst always being more expensive. I agree though that multiplats will probably look the same, although I hope this isn't true and devs use PC builds for PS4 (assuming 720 is less powerful than ps4).

Well considering edge got the ps4 spot on, the xbox will be a bit weaker. I agree with red though, but edge also said used game blocking ect, if so PS4 will triumph.

Technically no one got it spot on. Last minute RAM upgrade

Who's to say the Xbox couldn't do a last minute XX upgrade? Maybe it will be a last minute SLI inclusion. loljk

Well well, this gen ain't over. And both PS3 and 360 are about on par there is no 'clear winner' there.

PS3 might have sold faster with one year less on the market, but see it all in perspective.

XBOX 1 sold about 25 mln units. The 360 sold around 75 mln. That is a 300% increase of units sold.

PS2 sold 150+ mln units. PS3 sold around 75 mln. That is a 50% decrease of units sold compared to last gen.

Pretty much they both now have 50% of the core console gamers market (I excluded Wii on purpose, as it sold to casuals and Nintendo fans pretty much). But the XBOX brand has been doing so much better than the Playstation brand, the latter one was so strong since long time going from PS1 to PS2 and then into PS3, that it is still shocking that they didn't sell more than the 360. Even at a higher price.

And again, this gen ain't over. If MS decides to drop the price of the 360 aggressive, as their costs per unit are lower than the PS3, the unit sales might go up a lot.

This is a double edged sword. Rumors had the ps4 with better hardware, and thhe rumored specs prved to be very accurate for the ps4. MS is rumored to launch kinect 2 with every console and are trying to keep the cost down. If they decide the match the more expensive hardware they risk pricing themselves over sony or selling at a very significant loss to keep up.

Its interesting. In a way, Kaz kept his promise. They announced first but have kept a lot close to the chest. They can see what MS announces and adjust accordingly. Their execs have essentially said as much. I wish it was E3 already. By then we would know everything about each console and know whats coming. Itll be a good year for everyone
