Five Reasons Not To Get Excited About the Next Gen Consoles

Hyperbolic title aside, this video illustrates some good points on why the next-generation of consoles and games in general will disappoint a lot of people, and the reasons behind it.

Good points, exclusive content is what will sell PS4/Xbox 720, however, games pushing new hardware are going to cost a lot of money to make. So, will  Sony/MS be making exclusives at a loss or break even? There just isn't enough people playing videogames to justify the order of magnitude development cost associated with each next-gen increment, hence multiplatform and microtransactions/DLC, and subscription services.
 
If I were Sony/MS I would have the mentality of "get the device in as many homes as possible, then try to get them to buy content/games" (Aka Amazon Kindle) So far Sony hasn't really pitched the PS4 for mass adoption, its just PS3 with better graphics and gaming social networking, which may be fine for them...but this is a business and they need to make money, and a lot of it.
    
 

 

 In this video: "Waah, next gen barely has better graphics than this gen!", followed by "Waah, high end graphics diminish the gameplay and increase production costs, graphics were fine back in 2004 we don't need more detail!". This video failed at making me less excited for PS4.

Still excited, glad I haven't become jaded.

So this is basically a rant against next gen consoles. Well first and foremost, there needs to be a new generation so the industry can advance. Like it or not, a large portion of the gaming community exclusively uses consoles for gaming. If the console generation is stuck with seriously dated hardware, the games/graphics/gameplay is going to be held back. This affects PCs whether they think so or not. A Developer is going to design effeciently and cost effective as possible. If a large consumer base is playing on dated hardware, they don't necessarily feel the need to push their limits. I feel with the new consoles and their respective hardware, and the ability for developers to solely concentrate on one set of parameters (console exclusives), the boundaries for graphics and gameplay will be pushed much farther out that what is currently out there today. Just look at the leap just in this console generation from launch games to what is being produced today, not to mention the ability for developers to create games on really dated, crippling hardware. If anything, it should be a much smoother experience between all game development, and that can only be a good thing.

Diminishing returns...coming from a PC fanboy...LMFAO. PCs are the greatest case of diminishing returns when it comes to hardware. Otherwise PCs would already be running games with the detail and draw distance of KZ: SF since enthusiasts can already build better hardware, albeit at a much steeper price.

Next gen will be multi platform...dude killed his own argument here...the more similar the hardware is, the more it is differentiated by its exclusive software. Guess who has the most award winning exclusive studio and most varied exclusive game styles.

Demos not worth our excitement...so graphics don't impress and are already nearing a plateau, so we should go back to 2004 graphics and work on story, yet the MM project, the story of watch dogs, and the ever story changing FF don't impress. Better graphics don't keep a good story from being good,  games like MGS prove this. If anything consoles are the systems that encourage story over graphics, not the rig that pushes Crysis 3 on ultra at 4k and 38FPS.

Can't trust it...So, we get game play and confirmed in game renders that expected lower end hardware than what we will be getting, but wait he thought we should go back to 2004 graphics.  BTW, doesn't TressFX look a lot like that 2004 Nividia geforce FX 6800 "Nalu" demo; only took 9 years to have their competitors support the game that implements it. 


Sony doesn't block used games with the PS4, but always online DRM and the inability to resell your PC games on steam isn't a problem. This is a digital issue and a personal choice, not a console issue. All those rumors were from fanboys just like him.

Console wasn't made for you...Just like your computer components weren't made for you...everything you buy is part of someone's bottom line.

I don't know about Zoyos reasoning, but it seems to me like he could have cut this almost fifteen minute video and just said consoles suck and pc rules. That what it seems he was going for, to me.

Read the comments by the PC fanboys on the video, someone wishes that Nintendo, and Sony never existed, as all they do is hold back pc gaming. A lovely bunch of people.

Exactly, this is a one sided @$$ view of the whole situation. 90% of what he mentions are problems with the industry, devs, publishers, and idiots who complain about sh*t like excessive sequels with no change, yet don't hold themselves to the same standards just because it supports them on another point (ex. crysis 3 being a graphics whores dream, but a otherwise pointless sequel) in this system warfest.

Yes and no, but I do agree that aside from the social fetuters nothing about the PS4's move from the PS3      seems neccesary.  I'm still stoked about the PS4 but this video had great points. It does seem as if sony is competing with themselves in some fields

For me, the reason to buy Next Gen console is only the games. If it has the game I want to play, I will buy that.
