Ps3 died what should I do....? - Thursday, March 14, 2013 5:58 PM ( #1 )
So my ps3 died yesterday so I was like crap oh well might as well wait for ps4 but then I realized Last of us and GTA5 are coming out at the end of this year and I REALLY want those games should I just buy a brand new ps3 now or wait till the ps4 comes and hopefully these 2 games will come out also on the ps4. What do you guys think I really do not want to buy the ps3 and only play it for a couple of months till the ps4 comesout which I think would be a waste of money.

This happened to me in January, my old fat launch 60GB died. I just bought the $300 500GB super slim. Unless you don't plan on playing PS3 games from now till the PS4, you might as well get a new one rather than deal with the hassle of repairing it (if it YLODed/overheated, it will fail again).

Only get it repaired if you can find someone that can REBALL the chips legs. No REFLOW. Because reflowing breaks really quickly again, Reballing can last for years, if done properly, certainly if the repair guy uses solder with lead (this gen consoles they started to use non lead solder which is weaker/breaks easier).

But that isn't cheap. Easily up to 100 USD. Maybe its better to wait a bit, probably pricedrop for PS3 announced soonish with PS4 coming soon. Price for a PS3 is a tad too high at this moment with the newest PS3 superslim out, prices hardly dropped. Sony has the pricedrop up for anytime soon....

You don't want to keep playing all the PS3 games you own yet? Those discs won't play on a PS4 you know...

I don't think there will be a PS4 version of The Last of Us. I do think there will be a PS4 version of GTAV actually, would be a major bomb dropped by Sony if they manage to get the PS4 out in September with GTAV's releasedate especially in a console bundle.

Dang...

I was thinking of getting it repaired locally, but that info makes me hesitant of bothering with that.  Can fat harddrives fit on slims/super slims?

Buy a new one as soon as you can find a good deal. I'm sure they will make a Last of Us bundle.

That's sounds like a good idea (really want to play it).

Can you, or someone else, answer my previous harddrive question?

I believe they are both standard laptop HDDs. It will however need to be formatted to the new one, removing all your data in the process.

It is worth trying to fix it long enough to backup your data to another HDD so the data can be transferred to a new PS3 imo.

Hopefully you had PS Plus cloud backup. If not, try to recover the save data, if you can get it on at all even for a bit before it overheats.

The repairs are a risk, which is why I wouldn't recommend it. You cannot know how long you'll get out of your PS3 post-failure, especially if the components have taken damage as well.

I think they all use the same laptop HDD as Emilio said

I've repaired a PS3 crapily that was already crapily repaired before and it lasted about 2 months.  It was free so I can't complain, but you should be able to repair it long enough to back it up if needed. It's not that hard, you can do it. Also swapped HDDs, which was incredibly easy. Took about 2 hrs, but I had an almost full 250gb and most of time was just waiting for uploads/downloads.

Thanks for the sad info.

I don't have Cloud backup unfortunately.

Edit:  Good suggestion, Emilio.  The thing I don't like about that is paying X amount of dollars to repair JUST to copy save data to be transferred to a more durable PS3.

PS3's load screen won't even pop up for a moment before YLOD happens.

Yeah this is what I was thinking but im not gonna buy a ps3 just for 1 game to play for a couple months. I really hope ps4 offers a cloud gaming for last of us.

When my phat PS3 died a couple of years ago Sony offered me a refurbished PS Slim for the $130 repair price. It's been working well since.

Try the hairdryer trick. Worked with my fatty a few times when I was trying to get my data back. First time I got it working for a day, then it worked for like another 2 weeks and then I fought with the store I got it from and got a partial refund even though I got it 3 years before.
