RTS Games for Beginners? - Sunday, April 21, 2013 1:15 PM ( #1 )
What are some good RTS games for someone who's never touched one in their life? They seem fun, but when I see them in action, they look ultra complicated. What's a good starting place that isn't watered down, but can ease me in all nice-like?

Most RTS game will ease you into its mechanics in the single-player.

So, you can pretty much pick whatever game you want. Starcraft2, CompanyOfHeroes, Warhammer40k, etc.

Command and conquer. Get red alert 2 and play the campaign. Really fun basic RTS in single player. Although as Ducky said, most of them will ease you into it. C&C is as easy to play as it gets.

Thanks. I saw a vid for Company of Heroes 2. I'm downloading the original's demo now. I think I might've tried a Command & Conquer game for the 360 a long time ago.

"For the 360" is yer problem. That woulda been...I can't even remember(Tiberium wars?). It was the start of the downfall of Command and Conquer though(Or at least it was during it). Red Alert 2 is tiny, old and will run on any PC these days, yet it is still amazing. I loved C&C 1 all the way up to Red Alert 2 and was a bit wavy on Generals. Those games are well before the 360 era though.

If you're a fan of star wars, play Empire at War and Empire at War: forces of corruption. Both are great and you can get them both together for 9.99 at many stores (including mine).

Most RTS really hold your hand while learning the ropes... get through the tutorials which can be long but worth it and than the games open op...  most action adventure and FPS gamers think these games are slow and boring but in the end the amount decisions grow and grow. to the point of where you are as hyped up as you can be on those other genres...

TBS games are the same... as the balances of resources and decisions and empire building become more and more important and more and more often...

One of my most favorite is The Settlers Series   the 7th edition of the game is out on steam and that is one where I would start it is more of a challenge of balancing things than out right build base empire and than attack... this not just empire build but empire building and infrastructure... to make and maintain a stable economy...

The art is awesome, the game has a great tutorial and story... well worth it...

Checkers.

There's always one...

So I'm guessing the consensus here is to not worry about the learning curve and just go for it?

I'd suggest Dawn of War 2, it's the first action rts game that got me into the genre.  At most you control 4 squads that you can level up and customize with gear.  It's so much fun, I guarantee you'll love it.

I'd say CnC series, it started the formula, and for the most part kept it simple. http://www.amazon.com/Com...r=1CR9M8FPFP06W251FM74

Warcraft 3!!!

Also, Civilization Revolution was the easiest Civ game and is sort of like an RTS but not real time. Maybe that can ease you into the basic mechanics of building vs defending?
