What are your top story-drive games with depth surpassing most of the crap out there?

Mine are:

Not quite the story itself but the narrative
Eternal Darkness

again, more so on character development than the story
Tales of the Abyss

Actual good stories
Legacy of Kain series , Lost Odyssey , Xenoblade and  Chrono Trigger

Red Dead Redemption had a good story. Mass Effect series is one of my favorites as well.

Xenosaga had some really cool characters. I always hated Shion though.

There are lots. Mostly JRPG's, where you get to the end credits and think ".......sh*t!"

Chrono Trigger (motherf*ckin tiem travel!)
Final Fantasy VI & X (multiple characters with deep backstories)
Secret Of Mana & Seiken Densetsu 3 (fairly cliche, but immersive and charming)
Xenoblade (interesting religious themes)
Metal Gear Solid 2 (confusing but in an enjoyable way)
Uncharted 2 (story telling nicely incorporated into the gameplay)
The Legend Of Zelda Skyward Sword
and...

I'm beginning to realize that games and movies are opposites in terms of how the story is done. Movies tend to have samey, unoriginal premises with good execution. Games are vice versa, and have cool, interesting premises, but tacky, bland executions.
