Meh I already have Google TV and a Roku box.  No need for this.  Also from what I've read, this seems like a waste.  There are thumb drives that plug into your TV that have Google TV on them, so it's a portable Google TV.  This Chromecast doesn't sound like it has all the features of google TV.  It's just all about streaming.

Meh.

Given Google's track record with things they produce them self and don't buy out, it should fail. Not even counting Android, Linux gets that credit.

Google TV? Wtf, how the heck haven't I heard of this. I think I'll get that instead.

Can you do Chrome browsing well with it? Like be able to watch videos from any site, etc. Or does it not support flash?

Eh, doesn't look too great form the quick research I just did...

I need something that will let my HDTV do some browsing.

Yes to all, though I'm not so sure the browser built in is actually Chrome.   The only reason you've never heard of the google TV thumb drives is because google didn't make them.

Not sure if Google copied this, or this is actually better than this chromecast, but it sure as hell came out first.

Web browsing on a TV makes about as much sense as web browsing on a console, none whatsoever.

I can only assume it's for having porn on a large TV.  Not that you couldn't do the same with an HDMI cable connected to your laptop/PC.

Mainly for watching videos. A lot of the sites that my family wants Hindi movies from aren't from youtube/etc. So need something to put that up the big screen w/o me dragging a laptop everytime.

So does this basically work like a more robust ipad/apple tv connection where you can push whatever you are watching on the ipad to the TV? So if I have a chrome web browser app on my device, I should be able to push whateverI am watching within the chrome browser *cough*porn*cough* on my TV. Thats kinds cool.

Well, I wouldn't say it's pointless. Casual web browsing? Sure, but watching a high res video on a larger screen is nice sometimes. Though, many laptops come with HDMI ports, so I don't see much problem in plugging one into your TV if you really wanted to...

I like most things Google puts out, self produced or not, I'm happy with them so far, but i don't venture too much into tv related crap. Google Fiber is amazing i must say. So when and if they offer that here in the NYC area, i'm bought.

You can only use youtube Netflix and Pandora on the iPad and the chrome extension its only available on the laptops. I think this is really cool because there's almost no set up at all and probably a lot of apps will add this functionality, and it just 35 bucks and includes 3 months of Netflix thats an awesome deal

That makes zero sense.  If it's plugged into a USB port, it's receiving all the power it needs.

edit - Ok I looked into it.  I thought this thing was a USB stick, I didn't realize it was actually an HDMI connector.  So you either have to plug the cord into the wall, or you can plug the cord into a USB port on your TV if it has one.   I think I'd rather spend the extra $15 and get the basic roku box that will do a hell of a lot more.

couple questions about roku that I could probably get answered through some searching but might as well try here. Can you control it with your tablet or smartphone? Can you push content from your tablet/smartphone to the roku. I also believe the roku has usb port so if you could connect an external hard drive with movies on it, that would be cool too.

I don't know about the external hdd but I know for sure there is an app to control it through your mobile device.
