a multiplayer game such as Battlefield 4 where Xbox players can play Playstation players? is this even possible?

No. Sony, and Microsoft don't wan this, because they want you to play on their platforms.

It is possible cross platform but most companies don;t want this...so that way you buy the same console as your friends...

I'd guess that it could potentially be quite complicated to achieve because of the different console architectures, the different online services (e.g. achievement types), the different frames per second that different consoles can have, the extra content that one console version might have over another including different cheat types (which I haven't used since the 16 bit age). Perhaps it would be easier to achieve with a simple turn based type of multiplayer game. But, with all the complications, plus the risk of one type of console players deliberately turning against the other, the potential for different kinds of online war (including viruses) and things not satisfactorily matching up between them, seems far too high to be worth it. Plus it just dilutes all console brands for them to have this 'no man's land' where they are all supposed to engaged in friendly rivalry. It'd be like the start of the end for consoles to even humour this one size fits all PC model. Each of them wants your friends to buy your console, not to taint their console by playing against just any console player.
