N4G Book Club - Tuesday, July 01, 2008 8:40 PM ( #1 )
Post here what book you are currently reading, who's it by,  a summary of what it's about and your current rating of it.

Right now I am reading Thir-teen, by RIchard K. Morgan.  It's set 100 years in the future. It's about a member of a failed US experiment on mars to create elite soldiers, and how this ex-member is now working for the govt to find and assainate the other member.  I'm only one chapter in so far, but it's pretty damn gripping right from the start... opens right up in the middle of an assasination.

I'm currently reading In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. It's based on his time spent in a small town in which a family had been murdered. He and Harper (Nell) Lee researched it, though he later denied much of her assistance. It was pretty much the work he wrote to get a Pulitzer; interesting guy.

I'm reading a manga. "Bastard!!" by Kazushi Hagiwara. I think that's his name.

It's quite funny. It's an action comedy about a wizard summoned by a city priest in order to fight an invading army, but the wizard himself was once the leader of that army, and a lot of friction is caused. To further complicate things, the host body for the wizard is a wimpy kid.

It's heavily influenced by 80s heavy metal, and has a ton of references.

I'm reading Skin by Ted Dekker. It goes like this

Skin
In the tradition of Thr3e comes the most twisting, unpredictable Ted Dekker novel yet...a story of revenge with a shocking premise and numerous reversals.

A radically countercultural story, Skin asks the question "what is beauty?" Far more than a philosophical question, it's a matter of life and death when a serial killer blazes into Summerville, Nevada. What makes the beautiful ugly and the ugly beautiful? The answer will shock--and haunt--you long after the last page of Skin.

Psycho Sterling Red is on a killing spree, and he is playing a devilish game of mutilation and disfigurement with five unsuspecting and defenseless victims. Five people who came to meet each other through a series of freak circumstances. Red is putting these people through a living gore-fest as he directs evil into each of their lives. He kills without remorse, sucking on a mustard bottle or globs of mayonnaise after the deed is done. Suffering with seizures, which he believes are a weakness, he is tormented by his own body and seeks to make others suffer too.

These five people, Wendy, Colt, Jerry, Nicole and Carey find themselves helplessly in alternating realities. With no control over their environment they are dragged into this sick game with Red. He psychologically tortures them and follows up with the trauma of the day. Keeping them mentally off-balance, Red exerts his will over them.

His living victims try to understand what this game is all about. They have never hurt him, don’t even know him, yet he says he is seeking revenge. What misdeed did Red attribute to them? They have no idea. All they know is one minute they are in a small town south of Las Vegas, and the next they are in the dessert. There are relational changes within the group, with each suspecting one another. In order to cope, the five group together to face their tormentor.

Amidst numerous conflicts, they determine they are being manipulated by a hallucinogenic drug. Possibly electricity or microwaves sensitive to their frontal lobe epilepsy. Yes that is the common denominator amongst the five. There are downed power lines and black streaks in the sky with a loud humming noise. What do these things mean?

“Lycergitide. Best guess, the killer’s drugging them using different delivery systems at different locations –the gas station, in Colt’s cruiser, here. Then he transmits a signal that triggers the implants in the brain’s hippocampus.”

What is this thing you call "book?"
I skimmed through a Diablo manual a few days ago... Does that count?

Reading is the devil and TV is twice as fast.

I recently got around to reading something I've been dying to give a shot at ever since I heard about it. Remember I said that Karen Miller is my current favourite author? Well the Kingmaker, Kingbreaker series was released a while ago and she's already working on a new series - Godspeaker - which is shaping up quite nicely...

I'm also rereading all of the Chronicles of Ancient Darkness books up to Outcast, in preparation for Oathbreaker which comes out in September... Did you know Ridley Scott is doing the film adaptation of the first book in the series?

Does anyone know of any new (or old) fantasy novels they think I should read? I'm kinda running out of material...

I hereby ressurect this thread!

I just picked up a great book the other day called Dream Warrior by Sherrilyn Kenyon.  Rough summary:

It's about a Greek God Cratus.  He goes against Zues's will and gets banished to live as a human for the rest of eternity.  On top of his punishment he constantly is attracted to woman but everytime he gets close he goes "soft".  He is also brutally killed by demons every night and can never have any material posessions.  Eventually, in present day, zues calls upon him to help him fight off titans that will defeat all of the Olymian Gods without Cratus's help... but he decides to join the other side so he can take revenge on Zeus.

I'm not done yet but it's rare that i'm locked into a book like this one.  Funny thing is I rarely pick up random books at the store... I only bought this because I was going on a road trip and had nothing else to do.  I might have to start buying more random books now.

I'm in the middle of Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card, a classic sci-fi book.  I also love Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein, and no, it's NOTHING like the movie.

As did I, I thought it was decent. Holden was a good character at the begining but later in the book I just wanted to punch the guy in the face

I blame toughNAME for FFXIII's 2010 US-Eu releasedate. :)
