Has anyone seen the Powermat? - Saturday, October 17, 2009 1:42 PM
What do you think of it? Does it really work like the way it should?  Is it really possible to charge any tech with it?(iphones, cellphones, PDA's) Even handhelds!

It does work but you do need something attatched to the device you want to chearge which makes it kinda pointless at the moment. Its like the palm pre charging station where you just put the pre on top to charge it but the pre doesn need anything on it, you just drop it on top.

It's definitely an interesting idea, but I don't think I'd replace my cords just yet.  First of all, I don't really like the idea of my electronics just chilling on a mat, and second of all it is EXPENSIVE!  The mat is $99.99 and the case/dock you need to charge with is an additional $39.99.  PowerMat can kiss my ass!

@ Walker - I sort of felt that it was pointless due that same reason as well.  It would be amazing if all you needed was the mat.

Yeah hopefully the tech will be included in lots of phones and handhelds within a couple of years.

heres a quick user review which seems pretty informative, source
"For the system as a whole... it does what it says it does. All you have to do is place the phone on the mat within the vicinity of one of its three magnetic charging areas. The magnet pulls the phone to where it wants it to be so you don't have to worry about finding the sweet spot.
As far as the actual adapter on the phone itself.. I have mixed feelings about it. It does make the phone noticeably heavier... and it adds about 2-3 mm to the depth of the phone. I had prepared for that, but what I was not prepared for was the addition of two plastic pieces that stick out of the sides near the bottom corners of phone. It makes using the holster a pain.
All in all... I think its a cool gadget. Its definitely not necessary unless you have just a ton of electronic gadgets (and I wouldn't put it past some of you)"

It's not so much this device but what it could lead to. It's expensive because it's one of the first devices to do this (along with the Pre charger). In fact I'm surprised it's not a little more. It doesn't look like it's built cheaply either (though the green looks a bit funky).

But there are always complaints with proprietary charging/syncing cables for many phones so this could potentially solve this issue if companies that make phones and other devices could work by themselves with something like this like Walker said.  If this tech started appearing in cars and other places it could be pretty cool. Though that isn't probably likely for a while.

I would also like to see this wall-mountable if devices would stick.

If they could make it so that everything used these mats and all gadgets had some built-in compatibility I would definitely be interested.  I really don't like the idea of having to use that case, especially after reading about how heavy it supposedly is.  My iPhone 3G already has a good amount of weight to it, so I wouldn't want to burden it with added weight.

Pointless device until companies start embedding the technology inside the phones and devices for an actual wireless recharge.

Not to mention you have the buy a device for your device so you can charge while you charge.

Saw it at Best Buy last weekend.  It's a gimmick nothing more nothing less.

I saw this tech implemented into a counter top at one of the tech shows this year and it seemed really interesting but like many have already said until it is implemented into the device itself it's nothing more than a gimmick.
