Two Red Lights - On My Xbox 360 - But WHY!?! - Saturday, November 07, 2009 4:38 PM
Okay, So I was trying to do that annoying fight club on Ballad of Gay Tony, and had my iPod on, it was not until a song changed until I realised how bloody loud my Xbox 360 was, it sounded like all the fans where going full blast.

So of course I sh*t myself and turned the console off, turned it back on only to find Two Red Rings on the front, the 2 on the left, like so:

Now this means overheating

But there is no way in hell my console was overheated, seriously, heres why:

1. Its an Elite SKU
2. Its in a very well, open and ventilated space and is laid down horizontally
3. The game I was playing at the time was installed to the HDD, so almost no strain on the disk drive, infact   EVERY single game I play is first installed to the HDD.
4. I take very good care of my Xbox 360, it is dusted weekly and the vents are clean and clear
5. And most importantly, the console had only been on for 10 Minutes, I mean that in the litral sense (I checked the time, 10 minutes for god sake)
6. (EDIT) - And my bedroom is FREEZING, seriously my fingers are like ice

So Why on EARTH did this happen!?!? :(  Now I'm crapping myself that my 360 is going to break.

Hmm, check the connection to the power brick and also if you have the charge kits check them, I had a faulty wire for one of the charge kits and my 360 wouldn't turn on(the power brick light was going red). Also it's recommended to have it plugged it into the mains if you don't.

Right cheers, I don't have a play and charge kit, the only thing I got connected is a wireless adapter, but just to be sure I disconnected everything (like power adapter and HDMI) and re-connected them, and I'll leave it now for a few hours.

No problem, if it's not that then it's either a pretty bad fault or somehow it did actually overheat but I'm no expert on these things.

"
Overheating the Console
Quadrants 1 and 3 will flash on the ring of light when the console has reached temperatures of an unusually high level. The console will shut off the CPU (Central Processing Unit) and GPU (Graphics Processing Unit), running the fans located inside the console at full speed until it has cooled sufficiently."

You should be able to let it cool down and you should be back in business.  This isn't a RROD/3RLOD failure.

The chipset can get very hot within minutes so playing even for 10min can get the temp up.   Make sure you check the fans in the back and make sure they are spinning and free of any dust.

Try it again and let us know if it fails again with the same error.  I've seen this error on another system but it happened one time and never returned and that console is still alive to this day.

Good luck and Marius you are a real d*ck.

I strongly suggest you get your Xbox 360's thermal paste replaced with high-quality Arctic Silver. Remove that cheap useless thermal paste Microsoft put in to begin with. Arctic Silver may as well be an angel to all 360's. Learned how to hardmod my 360's motherboard from a guy over ebay who was kind enough to walk me through the steps incase something happens in the future. I also suggest you get your regular 5 watt  fans Microsoft cheaply added replaced with either a 9,10,12 watt fan. Or a Centrex Fan switch allowing you to change the speed of the fans between 3 to 12 watts.  I suggest a 12 watt. Since you burn your games to you HDD that sucker will stay ice cold with a 12 watt. Also if you're worried about power consumption you can get a usb powermometer.

If you're not much around tech smarts you can find someone on ebay to do this for dirt cheap compared to Microsoft charging you an arm and a leg for. That is of course if you have warranty. Bet getting your 360 modded is a safer investment.

Thanks for the info man, maybe as a last resort, I REALLY don't want to be opening my console and modding it...But again thanks

I just turned my 360 again, and within 30 f*cking seconds it happened again, this time it didn't beat around the bush, fans kicked in, console went apesh*t, the 2 red lights came on and it shut down

I feel like crying/punching someone, seriously I love the 360 software and it has amazing games but I hate microsoft for making such a poorly built console.

I will leave it now, for 24 hours, and tomorrow take off all the connections and give everything a real good clean, after a day, if it happens again, looks like I'm calling MS tech support on Monday *sigh*

If it comes to it, I'll sort the damn problem out myself with info from the Hitman dude above, I will NOT
Pay Microsoft so much as a f*cking PENNY to fix this, its barely over a year old elite for christ sake.

Really is a smart investment. I hope all goes well for you.

I can give you a few contacts I know who can help get your 360 almost bullet proof. Seriously I have never felt more better about doing something than the day I got my E73'd Xbox 360 Modded.  You're pretty much putting the pieces together that Microsoft was to ****ing lazy to do while rushing. I'm planning on getting my disc drive replaced with a more suitable less loud one.

Okay thanks man, Not sure how it would work giving me contacts unless there all online (I'm in the UK)

I'm on a BTEC National in IT...Only just started though, and its mostly software rather than hardware but I know a fair bit

I found a great video on opening up the 360: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uj2A7mGGjuY

But 2 very different sellers on eBay, both seem to be taking stabs are the over in their methods and type of things they use, what do you think?

1. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/XBOX-360-X-Clamp-Fix-Kit-RROD-Xclamp-Repair-HQ-Paste_W0QQitemZ230391047195QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_VideoGames_VideoGameAccessories_VideoGameAccessories_JN?hash=item35a460641b

I'm still holding some small bit of hope the problem will just go away (lol) or that Microsoft will do it for free, but I'm starting to think that aint gonna happen.. Anyway got to sleep now man, stressed and its like 3am here, thanks for the advice.

Oh never use the X-Clamp trick that **** may seem like a good fix but it's 50/50. Which just makes the 360 more faulty than before.

Here I contacted this guy on Ebay. I don't know if he ships outside the U.S though but it gives you a good idea of what features to look for added and good fixes.

Even though it's not a RROD, try the towel trick.  That saved me from having to send my 360 back once.  Granted.... it's just postponing the inevitable but hey, you'll be able to play MW2.  :P

I should point out, it doesn't matter if it's an Elite. They're as failure prone as the rest and it really doesn't matter how well you take care of any electronic, at some point something can go wrong. In this case, it sounds like the heatsink more than anything else (the fans just can't cool the hardware fast enough).

Call MS Support, sounds like it needs replaced more than anything.

Yeah for sure man.

Eiffel you just squashed my hopes of a cheap repair :( the best kind of prices I can find for any UK repair is like £60 ($100)

*sigh* You sure that them repair kits on eBay are no good at all?

It's Sunday, I will try the 360 again tonight and if it still has the problem which I'm guessing it will, I will call Microsoft tomorrow, get there take on it, see what they would be willing to do - if they want to charge me I'm more inclined to go with the cheap fix man, I simply cannot afford to be paying that kind of money for a repair.

- Oh and thanks a lot for the kind words and support guys, 'precciate it :)

Well they're are sites dedicated to offering ways to fixing your 360. I know a few that I used to hardmod my 360. I could send them to you if you're still considering investing in this.

You can get Arctic Silver and multi level watt fans at just about any hardware and electronic store. Fans is skeptical though. May want to just go to a best buy and ask if they have some spare watt fans to buy.

What's best buy? ;) again...In the UK Lmao

But you can buy that Arctic Silver on ebay for like £0.99 so I would probably buy that to use, and then buy one of the kits on eBay and go with the X clamp fix, it may not be perfect but it's the best I can afford..

Going to turn my 360 on for the first time since yesterday, will have been a full day..see how it goes lol

- Also, are the fans hard to put on? and do they cause a lot more noise? Can't stand a noisy console..

Right just tried it again, did the same thing

Microsoft probably won't fix it for free, and I don't want to wait for it to go to bloody Germany and back anyway

I can't afford to get it fixed by a pro, so I'm going to settle with buying my own arctic silver on eBay and choosing the best kit to use on eBay, I'll sort this thing out myself if it kills me.

Thanks ^_^

I have figured out I can do this entire thing for less than £9

I have chosen this seller: http://tinyurl.com/yf25y6m
He even offers to ring you if you are having troubles, and offers a long detailed PDF which sounds good to me

Also, completely on the comments made by Eiffel, I'm buying this Arctic 5 Silver gel to use, instead of the provided thermal gel from the kit above, ironically its more expensive than the kit itself lol: http://tinyurl.com/yj4g9ob
