CGI-like graphics in 2120

lol, i watched November's Qore segment on the CGI they used on Star Trek and Transformers 2 and well, they talked about the processing, rendering and amount of space it took Transformers 2 took 160 TB... lol anyway, how long do you think consoles will ever play CGI like quality graphics?

We should be able to get visuals roughly on par with CG now in less than 10 years, but by that point the CG we see in movies will be way more advanced. There's just no way real time graphics can ever catch up. I mean they can spend literally days processing a single frame for a Pixar movie whereas your PS5 or whatever is still going to have to do it on the fly.

I'd be pretty happy if games plateued next gen in terms of graphics and started to focus more on physics and lighting and other things.

Well pre-rendered sequences can be rendered with impossibly high resolution textures, impossibly high anti-aliasing, ray tracing, ambient occlusion, photon mapping, heavily subsurfed characters, accurate subsurface scattering, tweaked animation, pre-baked fluid dynamics, soft body dynamics and rigid body dynamics, accurate motion blur created by averaging over numerous frames very close together, high dynamic range, depth of field, accurate refraction, reflection, as many lights as you want, dynamic soft shadowing from an unlimited number of lights at an extremely high resolution, once it's rendered numerous post-processing effects may be added and tweaks made to the image - colour filters, lighting adjustments, removal of artifacts - and many more besides that I've forgotten. Point being, that even if a game can do all these things, a pre-rendered sequence will still look better because they can spend more time rendering and tweaking it. There is a stage at which a game might look like real life... in which case we'd say that it has finally caught up... but technically by rendering over a longer period of time you could create something that was more physically accurate.

I think we'll come to a time (about 20 years from now) where the CGI in movies and the real-time graphics in console games including animations and everything else will be on par with each other. People today think that just because console graphics currently are behind movie CGI that it's going to be the same in the future but what if somewhere along the line there's a massive breakthrough in the console department which bumps up there technical and graphical power up to movie and PC quality with no compromises. You need to think ahead and not the present like Pandamobile.

If you look at games like Uncharted 2 and think about that its running on graphics chip at about the same power as a geforce 6800 its not hard to realize that already next gen we will have graphics that will rival CGI. And thats only 3-4 years away. The CG you see in movies like Transformers etc is going to take a little longer but we will get there. 10 years is a good guess. But i think there will be the need for new generations after that. because if you combine large scale physics like towns being blown up or massive environmental changes like vulcanic erruption and earthquakes with CGI like graphics then thats gonna take a hell of alot more processing power. Would open up alot of possibilities for game designers if they could make games with such extreme options. But i think were gonna have to wait just a little bit longer before we see that.

Consoles will take next cycle, PC could already be there, depending on systemm it's problem is it's lack of real benchmark developers.

One day they have to hit the peak with movies... then it's a matter of waiting for the console/PC to catch up. Even PC games, no matter what the specs, can't produce gameplay graphics like those in a high end CGI movie.

I wouldn't mind at all if it evened out on all platforms and 1080p and 60 frames ( minimum) became the new standard. I was playing farcry 2 last night and it's an amazing looking game, DX10 lighting on pc make it extremely realistic and believable. As do the swaying trees and grass and particle effects. So I think physx and lighting are 2 things that help with immersion and make it more realistic, forget how many characters on screen and texture res, all of that is scalable. But without lighting and phyxs built in, games will be stuck in the dark ages

according to my very very precise number crunching and calculations on my fingers, i predict it will be in 13.34 years when we will see realtime CGI graphics. with factoring in improvements in compression, cpu speeds doubling every 18 months and increased speeds in RAMaswell as newer, more powerful programming languages, it is extremely likely. look back 13 years and look at the PS1, and look what we have now on the PS3, night and day, now add the same level of detail jump in the next 13, see where im going?

There is also always more you can do with CGI, until CGI doesn't look like CGI, it will never hit its peak.
