The Application Proclaimation(Android user thread) - Wednesday, March 23, 2011 12:23 PM ( #1 )

**********Updated for Jelly Bean (4.2.2) ******************

Alright Android has finally started to really take hold of the forum users so im thinking this thread will do some good.

This thread is designed for us Androidites to share our app, launcher, rooting, rom'ing and what-notness.

Rooting is a phone by phone deal so if you find a good tutorial for your phone please post it and I will add it to the OP. Fire away guys(Completely optional).

Android is a growing platform and there are not many experts to tap into(I promise you I am not one of them). That is a big thing im looking to do with this thread... Spreading knowledge..

Below are some tutorials and resources I use for rooting my own personal devices(rooting is a phone by phone deal) and my 5 current must have apps(any app). I encourage that my fellow Android users break the ice with their 5 must have apps. Try not to repeat just so we can expose lesser known apps. Please be civil. Its ****ty I have to ask but really dont **** on someone's picks or choices. Everyone is different thats the best part.. Different views spreads knowledge. Being a dick just makes you a dick.

Tutorials
Rooting check if your device is on the list then get to rooting.

i probably will, im keeping an eye on the 8.9 in galaxy tab.

as far as my favorite apps go:

Poweramp- best music player hands down, it even puts most dedicated mp3 players to shame. supports nearly all formats and has a 10 band eq with presets.

chompsms- way better than the stock sms app and can be configured to give you a lockscreen popup that you can reply in.

opera mobile- awesome fast browser.

astro- awesome file mgr

runkeeper- great tool for tracking walks and runs.

Nice the poweramp and chompsms are going to get tested for sure.

On the tablet front I cant quite get on board. Im a stickler for functional **** so the tablet doesnt cover enough bases for me. I have a powerful laptop and I know how to really take advantage of my phone so the Tablet doenst fit anywhere in my arsenal. Now, when they become dirt cheap I do see them as a nice big shiny remote or an interface for my listening pleasure but so far no tablet has the guts needed to push out satisfying sound production. Onkyo announced theyd have one out that was music focused. Im waiting for more detail though.

The galaxy s tabs are nice and all but they need to get the Super AMOLED screen on the tablets if they really want to make so dough.

I've been thinking about rooting these past few days, but I want to do it the safest way there is.

Aside from using your phone as a modem, what other cool stuff can you get out a rooted android?

unless somebody leaves one on a table somewhere, i won't be getting a tablet. i'm one of them people who just thinks it's redundant to have a cell, laptop, desktop... AND a tablet. with this thunderbolt i just got it seems like a freakin tablet. the screen is sick.

android ftw... i came off windows mobile 6.5. what a flippin joke!

Oh yeah. I can dock my Droid to my computer and text from my desktop. I can also control my apps via desktop. I can install /remove apps with out touching the phone. There is OC'n which ups speed if your into that. I personally did it for learning reasons but there are good things you can do. The Custom roms are nice. Once you root you Droid you can redo the skin of the OS. Really its just a bunch of lil thoughtful add ins that Google left out for whichever reason. Funny thing is the features that i have in my phone now were recently just added in the honeycomb update so in reality your just getting upgrades and tweaks faster.. Either way you can root your phone and still use normal Android.

@Duplissi

Dude you need no reasons to want a toy. You work for your money(i hope) get what you want with it. All i do is spend on toys(and tea). Im not a going out, partying, nice cars or clothes type of dude. I knowingly spend mostly on toys because its fun. Doenst make anyone better or worse...Just fun =D Stop thinking you need reasons to want ****. I just try to get stuff Ill use on a daily basis. Most of my toys are used daily thus warranting(in my mind lol) purchase.

dont need to root to tether, there are apps that do it for you, some of which are free. I find tethering slower than normal wifi, but I had to use it for a while when my internet went out. I don't have that issue anymore though since i gots a Chrome Netbook w/ free 3g for 2 years

Care to share which apps? I was not aware that I could tether without rooting or paying for it, neither of which i wanted to do :)

I'm running one of the 7.xx series Darky's Roms.  Been meaning to upgrade, but I didn't have PC access for a while there.

Can't think of any cool apps atm.  NewsRepublic is a nice little news aggregator. Uhh...Titanium backup is a handy solution for rooted users who want to get rid of pre-installed bloatware.  There are other options, but Titanium just made it really easy.

You normally need to root the device only more recent devices are coming out unlocked. Most phones out already need to be rooted to get around paying for tethering..

Easy Tether
Android Tethering
PDANet

I've tried two of those and I'm sure there are more but those seem to be rated higher than the others
