Opinion needed for game development - Sunday, May 29, 2011 10:23 AM ( #1 )
Hey guys, Me and my friends are finishing a game which will be released on Xbox Live Indie Games next month. It is called T.E.C. 3001 (Tesla Energy Collector) and it is third person, 3D action arcade game. You are guiding a robot through virtual space to collect energy for human kind. It will have 20 levels with many different obstacles. It’s easy to learn but hard to master, especially on latter levels where robot runs with great speed. Check out our gameplay video from the unfinished version and we will soon update topic with new videos. We need support and feedback so we can make it better so if you like it tell us something about it

It looks too much like an 'on rails' game if you know what I mean. Like, you're basically telling the player exactly where to go and not letting them figure it out themselves.

I think it looks cool to play. Better than anything I could do. Not that I've ever made a game before.

Looks nice, I'm not likely to buy it, but hey, good job anyway.

I guess the only tips I'd give you would be to add a sense of weight to the guy since he just seems to be floating along. Maybe add some kind of indicator that a certain obstacle is coming, I'm thinking of the parts where you have to jump and duck under obstacles and they're grey, that could get frustrating untill you learn the layout of the level. In other words, make the gameplay more reactive rather than trial and error. More contrast between the track and the surrounding landscape would also be good since they kind of blend together at times.

Have him wear a sonic skin :P, joke aside  love the futuristic set you got there.  A bit stiff  but overall I could see myself playing that every now and then after playing some big game or just when I'm bored. are the characters customizable?

It looks pretty cool. Only two things that I personally don't like.

1) The leg animations look a bit strange.

2) The game looks like it doesn't randomly generate any parts of the levels, so once you have it memorized, it's easy. Is it randomly generated?

Character is not customizable. At least, we are planning that in the sequel if this goes well. Animations are being corrected as we speak so they will look better.

World is not randomly generated, but believe me, it is very hard to play. Video somehow gives impression it is easy. Every level is 1 minute long - if you know where to go and don't die :) - latter levels need 1-2 hours of trials to get to the end.

Hi again.

Here is new video showing statistics screen at the end of the level. There is ranking system
based on collected batteries, time and broken objects.

Wow, it looks very good. I wish the devs would still drop by this thread, they should put it on steam instead of Xbox live.

The only thing I can see that's a little awkward is the leg animations.  Perhaps incorporate more speed pads to give the game a faster flow, it seems later on you already do this, but the beginning seems to be quite cumbersome in comparison.

That's just me though, I guess the idea you had was to establish a successive flow with it going continually faster as the player advances.  The worst thing about dying for me is that you have to restart from a slow pace which can become frustrating.

Steam is latter option for now because we need this version to go well at first. It is problem for us to get it working on every pc configuration.

@Unknown
It's true, it was frustrating when you die and start all over, so we put speed pads at the each level beginning and we introduced checkpoints. There will be at least one or two check points on hard levels. You instantly start running from last checkpoint when you die if you collected that checkpoint.
