Router Problems - Monday, June 15, 2009 7:39 PM
Ok, I got a D-link DIR-655 wireless gaming router and it has recently crapped out on me after 5 months of use with my ps3. So I was wondering which wireless router would you guys recommend for me to use with my ps3.

Link-sys,WRTN 330N wireless gaming router.

That thing has been the awesome sauce for me since I got it and port forwarded it.
No problems yet what so ever, and powerful.

I suggest anything form the Linksys WRT54GL category, then put on DD-WRT firmware for it, then you can overclock the router aswell as have a much better interface with much MUCH more options, including a very good gaming mode

alright, just give me a PM

and come on, with the DD-WRT firmware you turn the $60 router into a $600 router in 5 minutes of work

That's the exact setup I had at my old apartment, but when I moved I left the router with my ex because she didn't have one and now I have this crappy dlink thing I got for free.  It sucks.  Getting DD-WRT on that old Linksys really did turn a somewhat crappy router into the best one I've ever had.

Maybe once you load up some awesome cfw I'll agree.  Linksys couldn't design a decent firmware if their lives depended on it.

if you are not getting all hardcore about it...any new Linksys or Netgear router should be fine for home use...Netgears are generally said to have a superior interface for 'newer' users, especially when compared to the older but still common WRT54's linksys used to sell by the billion...but newer linksys routers are just as easy to set up...and far better stability wise than their older brothers...plus linksys stuff is way more common, with a much bigger 'community' into modding them and stuff...you won't find much aftermarket support for most Netgears, but can do all kinds of crazy stuff to pretty much any linksys in the future...if you were so inclined...

as far as performance...its not going to be that big of a deal...I've had an older Netgear wireless G MIMO router now for a few years...the MIMO stuff has since been replaced entirely, so you won't find that on anything new more or less...but its still perfect for any G wireless connection I need...used it with multiple LANS and service providers...never once had a problem with it...no needing to reset it all the time for no apperant reason (cough, linksys WRT54G, cough...although all kinds of cracked firmwares will fix that in seconds)...and VERY easy NAT controls, firewall settings, etc. in the UI...just turning NAT filtering off has given me a NAT type 2 connection on my PS3 since I bought it...with both DSL and Cable service...with all the headaches I have seen people run into with no voip, or bad PSN connections etc being related to their routers...i'm pretty happy that I didn't run into that...
